You would think this debate would be over, but there still seems to be some people who debate what a quality backlink truly is.

Links don't have to come from niche related sites to be powerful.

BBC, Mashable etc cover a wide range of topics, the scenario you mentioned is obviously unlikely - but I would still 100% take a link back from any of those sites to a plumbing website.
