Im a wedding photographer, we recently photographed a wedding in florence and took some lovely scenery shots.

Several travel websites contacted me asking to use the photos, providing these arent spammy websites would the back link be good for my site?

Say hundreds of travel websites contact me asking the same thing, I would end up having a lot of backlinks from websites not related to wedding photography. Would these be then bad backlinks?

well there is a certain affinity between travel sites and wedding photography, because a sub-niche of travel is wedding destinations, like 'have your wedding in tropical paradise'

but i would still be selective, and choose sites that have some kind of wedding packages, so the relevancy goes up miles, and you will be miles ahead
    your competitors.

travel-only sites are also good IF you mix it up with photography sites, then no problem, unless...well so many factors, like so-called spam sites, but who has the time to have background checks on everybody. only the cia and the nsi

i would suggest only having back links from the websites that have bearing to your field of wedding photography otherwise they will just appear as spam.

You need to make sure few things before finally allowing someone to use your images:
    1. Are the back links related to your niche? They must be.
    2. Do the websites look spamy or unprofessional? If they do, don't allow them.

However, the more back links you get, the better it is. Just make sure that the websites don't sound and look spamy.
    Thanks

cheers for all the responses guys!

so for example, what if a really highly rated website such as the apple.com, bbc.com or huffington post wanted to use the image. I imagine that they are very popular websites highly rated sites. Should they still be avoided?

Surprise! Not all backlinks are good! Most SEO service companies still regard all backlinks as good. That's because for a long time Google did relatively nothing about spammy backlinks and, in fact, often rewarded the spammiest link-builders. That is no longer true.
In fact, Google has found a way to catch spammy link builders and it is punishing those sites using spammy tactics. Backlinks have been treated as a positive ranking signal for so long that relatively few companies have evaluated how Google has changed its ranking scheme.
Most SEO companies have never questioned the status quo of backlinks. Today we would estimate that 90% of SEO companies have not changed their backlinking tactics. If you are working with a company that has not kept up with the changes in Google, you will be surprised to find your site plummeting in the search results.

It's obviously a topic that divides people. We recently got a backlink from vice.com - most people will know that its quite a well known 'news outlet' but on an article that isn't relevant in any way to our niche or photography or anything at all. Not really sure what we should do.

The main difference between good and bad backlinks is the quality of the website they are on. Sometimes bad backlinks are easy to find, sometimes you do have to check the website itself to see if and why the backlink can have a negative impact on your website.

Bad backlinks, or low-quality backlinks, is a topic that is often mentioned in the intake form of our reviews. Websites that have made the mistake of hiring some shady SEO company to buy bad backlinks for their website and have lost almost all their rankings often turn to us for a proper analysis of the drop. Although buying bad links might give you short term wins, it will backfire in the end; when Google finds out. Unnatural links indicate that your website might not have the quality or content to be interesting enough to get proper backlinks on its own. At the end of this article, we'll mention a way to get great backlinks without buying any.
