Hi All

I have a domain which I would rank, it contains my main keyword and a small word at the start.

For examples sake im going to say my website is thegardenguide.com.

Lets say I have 10 pages of content on this site.

Two of the pages are
/garden-guide
/garden-tips

Which one of these would be the homepage if I want garden guide to rank? Would it be better as a separate page?

Essentially, what I want to know is whether or not I use the same topic as the domain as the home page?

This has always been a little mind boggling to me.

Thanks

Your domain name and file names have no real effect on whether you will rank for any keyword phrase. Your content and backlinks are what matters.

Better to keep them as a separate page If you have already created the web pages on your site.
That will help better in ranking and you can easily change your homepage as desired.
