Where to start with SEO?

SEO is the bane of my life at the moment!
I've got so many things that I need to put into place to get my site further up the search ranking that it's getting a bit overwhelming.
All of my website copy needs to be re-written as the website designer I used when I first started out didn't take SEO into account when giving me something flash and fancy (is that normal btw?!)
Anyway, I'm currently getting someone to write a series of keyword focussed blogs and my copy is being re-done of course, but I have a whole list of other things to look at, even down to how much white space is on the page.

Where should I start with this?

I was considering paying someone from a site like Freelancer or Upwork but I've heard dodgy things about them - is it best just to do that and get it all done, or is it something I should work my way through myself even though that's likely to take forever?

My industry is so competitive I need my ranking to increase quickly but as a one-man-band that's proving time-consuming.

How have you prioritised getting your site fully optimised as quickly as possible? I'll be so thankful for any advice...
#seo #start

May we ask what industry that is? Reason I ask is because some industries are so competitive you will need a good bit of money to compete - Insurance or law for example.

Starting your SEO campaign with getting extra backlink profile for your money site, you have to planning your first and second tier of your linkbuilding campaign, for first tier you could get it whether is from web 2.0 (contextual links on articles or links on bio), social bookmarking sites, listing your web on directory sites, signature links in influenced forum at your niches and of course guestposting or homepage links from TLD sites which i'm provide. Just visit my thread for more detail. For second tiered links you can using automatic linkbuilding software like GSA, SEnuke or any linkbuilding automation software. Dont forget indexification of your backlink if you want get result as quickly as possible.

Good Lord man....do you people do any SEO or even read about it? Spammy links like the ones you know how to use are minimally effective in ranking affiliate sites, Adsense only etc. Worse they now get many sites manually penalized.

If you are still using Senuke in 2016 you are either using hacked versions or not thinking,

Most good SEOs do NOT "have to plan their first and second tier" they know how to get quality in context links.

I think you're too much praying(which is good for you) and reading google propaganda like "Google funneled more resource into their webspam team, they started to penalise sites who had been publicly selling links through broker sites, or on forums. This penalty was generally a reduction in PageRank, but in extreme cases it could be a de-indexing."

        Did this stop link buying?
        Nope.
It just forced those buying and selling links to exercise discretion discretion — making it harder for Google to catch sites who were breaking the rules.

And to clarify, buying links for the purposes of increasing your rankings is definitely breaking Google’s rules. And the thing is, for Google, these link buys are pretty undetectable. How can they tell if a link from within a piece of editorial content has been paid for?

        The answer is, they can’t.

Honestly i prefer GSA than SEnuke and outsource some legit backlink list provider like bluebox from Matt Borden aka loopline because it saving much time.
And for you? how about not troll anyone comment and give very wise advice like "Most good SEOs do NOT have to plan their first and second tier"
instead give a clue about what you are saying with "they know how to get quality in context links"
        Bazinga!

On page optimization is the first step as you have already started. Then move to building links, getting social signals etc. Yes, it's a lot of work. Some of the best ways to create quality links are, guest blogging, networking with bloggers in your niche, infographic marketing etc.

    All the best!

Firstly focus on the On-Page activity that you have already stated. Find out what are the trending keywords used by your competitors and work on it. Also the second thing is to build more number of back links to get traffic.

Hi there! You start by optimizing the home page of your website. In this content, there should be at least 1 internal link going to any of the pages in your sites, a couple more links going to external sources, a bunch of keywords that will accurately define the niche that you have (just be careful not to over stuff), some pics, and a video (optional). Then make sure the content is properly spaced and proofread your work before posting to avoid grammar and spelling mistakes...
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10887049].message }}
  • I think content is the most important criteria for search engines. Sites that update their content on a regular basis are more likely to get crawled more frequently. You can provide fresh content through a blog that is on your site. Secondly, hosting your blog on a reliable server, which has a good uptime. Other things that need to be checked are sitemap submission, which is one of the fastest ways your site can get discovered by search engine bots. Also, avoiding duplicate content since it decreases crawl rates. You should also check your page load time, it should not take long. If the crawlers spend a lot of time crawling huge images or files on your website, they will not have much time left to visit other pages. Lastly, by using Robots.txt it will help stop the search engine bots from crawling to unimportant parts of your site.

Some off page seo techniques that can help are -
    Social Network Posts
    Social Bookmarking
    Web Directories
    Press Release
    Article Submissions

    Hi,

Some simple steps to start SEO for your website:

On - Page optimisation - There are some most important categories in on page seo

    a) Content - The first & most important on page technique is content. Google always redirects you to the greatest content on the web. That means your first task is to produce original & valuable content among your industry for your audience.

    b) Keywords Research - To understand your audience you need to find out your industry oriented keywords to rank in top among your audiences.

    c) HTML - Four parts of HTML you need to optimise each every single page of your website i.e Title tags, Meta Description, Schema, Subheads.

    d) Site Architechture - You need to optimise some things to rank your web page in search engine i.e Easy to crwal, Duplicate Content, Mobile freindly, Page speed, Keywords in urls.

Similiarly there are some off page techniques which can help you to optimise your webpage.

Can I do SEO for myself?
Ofcourse if you know some basic rules of seo you can start optimising your website on your own. You can also start SEO Course which would help you to optimise your website.

Hi, the best think to do is google search your own domain name or business name to see which page it is ranking, then see who's ranking in above the fold on page 1 for similar website. all you need to do is look at the keywords or phrase they used then copy them in to your listing or titles that may do the trick.

look for blog sites that talk about your industry join them write article then link them to your site, will boost your ranking, do a you tube channel talk about the product you sell then link your website to you tube channel.
    cheers

Start with On-Page SEO. It's super easy to learn and implement. Also make sure your site is super fast. From what I can tell, this metric holds some weight in Googles ranking algorithm.

Next is content. A lot of content. Make sure you follow On-Page SEO best practices when uploading your content. Then post your content to all of your social media profiles. I would suggest an article per day. I'm not sure if you write your own content or not. If you do, great! You can save some money. If not, research a few content writing services and test them out. I've tested almost every one out there with mild success. For the past two years, I settled on using LPA for content on my network of affiliate sites. Great mix of quality content at an affordable price. I purchase roughly 200 articles per month from them. Finding the right place to get content was a pain in the butt. Lots of time and money wasted. Luckily, I'm all set now.

After you have On-Page SEO and Content Generation covered, you can move on over to linkbulding. This gets tricky. You have to be super careful on what links your purchase. Let's face it, everyone buys links...Right! To play it safe, I always setup Web 2.0's and send links to them. Then they link back to my money sites. Nice amount of Link Juice flows down to my site. Over a period of time the DA and PA builds to a nice level. I honestly feel that link building is the hardest part of the equation.

I wish you all the best with your SEO efforts!

I agree with it was said before, the first stage of any SEO strategy is on page SEO, you have to optimized your website with some good keywords and make sure is being indexed by google, after you are done with that, you will have some solid ground for starting, and you can rank your website to see where you are.

The next step is to start building backlinks and user reviews.

Thanks everyone for your input! It seems there's a lot to do and it's going to be an ongoing and slow process! I've got someone doing my keyword research at the moment which my home page copy and blogs re being written around.

The rest I'm still tossing up whether to learn it myself or pay someone who already knows what they're doing! I'm dubious to put the time into learning it as I have heard that Google change their minds on what they're looking for all the time!

Thanks again for your advice there was some really useful stuff in here.

if its a new domain, dont bother. Spend your money on an expired domain sort of relevance to your niche and go for it. I have loads of brand new sites loaded with content..well over a 2 years old. with loads of high quality links. It takes frikin ages now to rank new sites no matter how much juice your fire at them. I always start with a good quality ( good backlinks ) expired domain.. Dont get me wrog its easy to get to 2nd page on google but try getting to page one on any sort of competative niche.. you wont you will get stuck on page 2 for a long long time no matternow many power king links you have.

Here's how you could about it:
1)Start with an SEO audit and fix whats broken: with the help of google search console understand the keywords you want to get ranked for.

2)Run a thorough In-page audit of every web page
and Run a site-wide usability test to evaluate how user friendly your website is.

3)Build content that people would love to read and share

4)Build backlinks to your website aggressively using guest post, social media, internal linking etc.

    Cheers

Obviously you can handle SEO for your website, but right now when you are not much aware of SEO it is better to get things done correctly and faster. You can also solve your SEO doubts from the professional you hire.

    follow These simple steps.
    1. First Make a site with a clear hierarchy
    2. Make your web page easier to navigate
    3. Prepare a sitemap
    4. About Page titles and meta tags. Use unique and accurate titles for your webpages.
    5. Page not found
Sometimes users navigate through your site in odd ways or misspell your site’s url address. In the end they will see “Page not found”. Improve your users’ experience and guide them back to the homepage or the page they might be looking for with a custom 404 page.
    7. Describe your images. use alt tag in images.

A nice thread, am in the same boat - the SEO world seems to be a bit too complex for a newbie. From what I've gathered till now (please correct me if I'm wrong)

    1. Stay away from sites like Fiverr etc. unless you have someone who has used seller's service earlier (i know seeing the work involved temptation is huge )
    2. Spend some time on researching keywords from your niche which fit in your website's theme. Don't try to force fit keywords. Once you've satisfied, dig a bit deeper and find some long tail keywords (on which ranking your site is relatively easier)
    3. Focus on on-page SEO (Use googles SEO guide so you don't have to worry about what if) and focus on content (i.e. if you have content based site). Remember to use the list of keywords created in the previous steps
    4. Start working on creating backlinks via directory submission, article submission, document submission, forum posting etc. If time spent is a concern, do it for 5 keywords.
    5. See the results in 2-3 months (be patient and continue working)
    6. Always maintain a log of all the submissions etc.
    7. By 3-4 months you'll have an idea what works and what does not work, now you can easily outsource your work without worrying about being penalised

Would love to know if there is some issue in this approach or if I can do something better.

I can also add that a one man band will NEVER rank. You will not even get to the 2 page on Google. It is like you said too much work. You will have to outsource some of the SEO. Between Fiver, Freelancer, Upwork etc. I found that SEOclerks you get better work done for you for less money spent.

      .
There is no denying that it's an uphill struggle. New websites that are less than a year old need to do all they can to rank and even then, there's no guarantee of them featuring.

I'm dubious about using these Freelance websites, while I know that people offer a service for relatively cheap; you also open yourself up to them using black hat SEO techniques which you'll get punished for in the long run.

True about freelancers. Very true. But if you choose a SEOclerck with high number of positive reviews, and red all the comments and Q&A on his/her service, you will have a general common sense gut feeling about it. It's not hard to see if the freelancer is will do honest quality work or if he is black hat short cutting it. Especially when this service has done plenty of orders, by that time someone will have seen if the service is low quality and will have made bad comments.

Hi adamcurran, I know how you feel, I felt the same but you needless to re-write your copies if you don’t have time and/or little damage has been done. What I can suggest is, adding extra values into the old copies; it will look exactly new and attract more readers. Of course, I have not read your blog before and I have no idea how badly it is affected.

As for the flash and fancy designs aren't recommended in SEO long ago, however, implement local SEO will improve your website ranking as well.
