Long tailed keywords got me confused!

I jeep hearing about long tailed keywords and to be quite honest they've left me a bit confused!

Long-tailed keywords basically do what they say on the tin - they're a combination of three of four words added to your copy so that when someone types in more specific search request you will rank higher. So instead of 'mechanic' which there will be lots of completion for, you could add 'Ford mechanic in Castle Hill' which means that you'd be much more likely to appear at the top if anyone where to type that into Google.

But what I'm wondering is who sets these? I've never seen any in any of my keyword search research so is it just a case of deciding what fits and running that through your copy?

I can completely see the benefits in using them, I just don't know where people get them from!

    When i first started IM I focused mostly on the main short keywords. But when I looked at the google analytic's for my site. I could see the keywords I was getting traffic for. There were some very strange keywords to say the least.

    Since your site may be new, you won't have access to this data yet. I would suggest the place to start is to start typing your keywords into google (or Bing) and seeing what the suggestive type shows.

    One thing to keep in mind, with "long tail" you don't need to match the keyword exactly to rank.

    Long tail keywords can be 1-word long.

    What makes something a long or short-tail keyword is where it appears on the graph you draw if you measure how often they are used in a given period.

    So, imagine a curved line starting on the left side of your screen and ending at the bottom of the screen on the right side. The shortest keywords would appear at the top, on the left, most would appear at the bottom, on the left, some would appear on the line running along the bottom of your screen (or piece of paper).

    The further on the right they are, the longer the tail... Usually, 1 and 2-word keywords are short-tail and 6 words keywords are long tail. So, people end up confusing the two. Since it's usually the case, usually there's no problem.

    Take the word remortgage. Not many people search for it in the USA, lots of people do it in the UK. In the USA, it's long tail; in the UK, not so much.

    But if you're targeting British people who live in the US who want to refinance a house, lack of clarity will cost you. It is short tail, if you think narrowly (refinance-seekers of UK origin); it's long tail if you're just looking to rank a page about refinances (but if you're not targeting UK'ers, you lose money because you'll rank and not be able to connect).

    Do you have a site? Do you have analytics installed? Best thing for you to do is to see how people find your pages, then analyze those keywords...

    Now I am a bit confused what you want to say. What I know, A good keyword can be long tail or short tail. Depends on how much search volume the keyword have. Sometime you will get some keywords you will never expect. But if you research about keywords, You will see, some website have 1000-5000 keywords ranked. In that list you could see, long tail short tail blah blah blah. And when you search on google for a specific keyword, you will see google suggest you some more keywords as drop-down. Its a algorithm of google. Thank you

    Long tail keywords are basically gems they are buyer intent keywords or the keywords that will bring low but targeted traffic.

    Like lets talk about your example only If you rank for "Mechanic" and you sell mechanic services. So you will get many visitors who are either just searching for it or want to generate some data but if you will rank for long tails like "Mechanic services in Florida","Best mechanic stations in Vegas" then you will receive less visits but they would be searching for services only. Also you should keep in mind that long tails are easy to rank rather than a main keyword.

    No comes the point where should you find them the best tools would be google you can use that or ubersuggest.
    What I usually do is I add my seed keywords in ubersuggest and they provide me loads of related long tails then I feed them in Kwfinder and pick the ones that are easy to rank.
