Blog based on guest blogging - SEO issues

Hi,

I have a membership website and part of the website is a blog. The blog is only a complementary element of the website, but still quite important as it helps drawing traffic. The blog is based on guest blogging. People publish their articles on my website for free and in exchange I let them have their BIO section at the end of the article. Obviously most of the people want to include backlinks to their websites. Even though I accept only high quality content, it often happens that the contect is good, but their websites are not that great (very low authority). I don't want to reject these articles, but at the same time I am afraid that too many outboundlinks to not very authoritive website could hurt my SEO. I could of course use no-follow attributes and the problem would be solved, but I don't want to be dishonest and they would notice eventually anyway.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks a lot

As long as you publish the content FIRST than other websites do, you'll still have the SEO value much higher than those sites. Never-the-less having no-follow would still improve your score better...

I only accept original content so duplicate content should not be a problem.

You are right, it would be better, but it would not be fair towards the contributers.

I agree with @gprialde so far you publish first, it's no problem

Your replies having nothing to do with the question.

To the OP, make the writers show you their website before they submit their article. If you don't like it, reject it. Simple as that.

Guess you are right. There is no way around that.

I wouldn't worry so much about the "authority" of the other websites. I'd be more concerned with how relevant that other website is to my website, what that website's backlink profile is (do they have a bunch of dubious links pointing at them?) and the overall quality of their other articles. If it is a related website that has a good audience, you definitely want to post the article because there is a near 100% chance that the author will be tweeting the fact that the article is published on your website, thereby sending a whole lot of targeted traffic to your site.

Just look at it in terms of your own reputation. Would linking to the other site make people think twice about the credibility of your site? If the answer is "yes," you probably don't want the article. If the other site makes you look bad to your customers, there's a very good chance it is seen the same by search engines.

Honestly, though, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. Outbound links from a blog directory are not going to have a significant impact on your site's overall SEO.
