Yes you can do this though by far the easiest way is to use an adsense ready template where you just change your publisher number.

Other wise they way I would do it is...

Log into both google and wordpress admin screen.

In google goto adsense and create an advert for content which will in the end give you some code you need to input. Helps if you name the channels.

In wordpress I think it is in the apperance -> Widgets -> Text

Drag a text box into the column on the right (assuming it's on the right) and the the box will open so just paster the code from google in there.

After that has been done all is sorted.

Any questions please ask I'll try and help but I'm no guru.

    Best wishes

    Pete

Or, you could insert adsense blocks right in your articles. I once used the 'Adsense Injection' plugin. It inserts your desired size adsense blocks at random locations in your post. What I didn't like about it though is that it messes up with my embedded images when it sometimes randomly puts the adsense beside the images. And of course, TOS-wise, adsense and images side by side is not good.

  • "I just purchased Wordpress."

Really? How much did it cost? I would have sold you my copy much much cheaper

I'd be happy to install and configure the template and plugins you want to use for $25

I'll put Adsense in your template files... but I wouldn't recommend that. I'd recommend using a plug in.

Boy the replies on this thread are all over the map.
      Maybe I'm wrong, but...

I don't think you can add google ads on the "free" version
of wordpress if you are using it off of wordpress.com.

There is indeed a premium version. Maybe people think the
free wordpress hosted by wordpress.com is the only version.

Most people, like me, buy a domain with cpanel and wordpress
built in and install it. That so called "free" version allows you
to do anything you want. Add the adsense wherever you wish!
Don't confuse this as being the free version hosted by wordpress.

No matter what plugin, theme, etc. you get for your free
subdomain.wordpress.com, I don't see how they will allow you
to add google adsense as javascripts and stuff like that are a no-no.

You have to pay--either wordpress for the premium, hosted version,
or pay for your own domain and hosting. Again, don't confuse these
versions with the free subdomain wordpress blog offered for free.
That version is almost useless for monetizing.
