What is your process for determining if you will be able to outrank the top 3 results on Google for your target keyword? How do you go about it? I'm looking for suggestions.

Do you type Siteomain.com (<-- the domain name of the top result) inanchor:keyword (<-- the keyword you want to rank for)? Will this show you how many backlinks your competitor's webpage has with that keyword as the anchor text?

How do you guys determine if you'll be able to outrank the top 3 results?

I look at a number of things... To be honest my process is far from sophisticated and looking at backlinks etc.. I look at the number of results for a given term.. I look at the players within the serps.. are they big boys.. or are they local...

I look at specifically what types of pages there are. The time it takes me to look at say the top 5 its not to hard to tell that pages are juiced all to hell or not.

To a point it doesn't matter what the competition is, its more of a matter of can content be produced to get us there, and stay there. and is the effort worth the return? I'm not going to go after the keyword term "Xbox" anytime soon... there would be a great amount of effort, and juicing an affiliate site up there is probably not going to multiply the return side LOL

You can look at numbers and things all you want... Do YOU want a page in the top 10, or do you have a client willing to pay to get their page there? then you do the work. but again.. you have to understand your limits.. and looking at numbers such as competing pages is a really good start at understanding what those limits are.
