When checking the results of a certain keyword on 2 different places the organic results weren't identical to each other. Most of these results were location based, this makes it hard to tell whether my SEO is getting better or worse.

Do general search results exist? And how am I able to check these results?

Nope. Just about every search term is going to give region-specific results to some degree or another. There are not really any uniform across the board search results anymore and haven't been for some time.

The best you can do is sign out of all Google properties and use Chrome in incognito mode. All depending on the search phrase, you may or may not still get results that are geo-targeted to your location but at least they will not be tailored to what Google thinks you want to see, based on your past search behavior and sites you have visited.

      Thanks for replying.
How does google know where I'm located and would it be possible to see results from multiple locations even though I'm in just one location?

If you're on a desktop, minimum, Google knows the GEO location of your ISP (internet service provider). This can be off by miles, for instance If I search the keyword weather on a desktop Google usually shows the weather forecast for the area where my ISP is located which happens to be 50 - 60 miles away.

If it's mobile, Google has multiple options:
        • Cell tower triangulation like 911 for pinpointing your GEO location.
        • Public wifi (business location).
        • Google apps (Google Maps - GPS).
        • Browser (cache, history).
        • etc...

BTW, the GPS coordinates of cell phone towers are public domain.

Nope, there`s no such thing as a universal global rank, as all the results are always localized by Google for any searcher. So basically, you can check the results in any local Google like .nl or .dk, but the results would still be calculated for your IP (location) detected by Google, or affected by the proxies you might be using.

To check the rankings as from any locations you target - you can use the local proxies in a browser or a VPN, still keep in mind that the results may very even within one city (this would not be a 'global rank' but a rank from a random location within the city).

Finally, there are a lot of rank-checking tools now that allow geo-targetting - in some you can even enter a super-precise location to check the search results exactly as they are seen from a particular street. I`d recommend you trying RankTracker from SEO PowerSuite pack - when it comes to the local rankings - I prefer it as there`s no limitation for the number of search engines or projects to run. I use the licensed version, but free version allows to check the local rankings too.
