There are many ways to get traffic without building backlinks. It's depends on what type of visitors you want to target.

Paid Traffic - You can get huge traffic from Adwords, Bing, Youtube, and FB.

Free Traffic - So far, Twitter is the easiest way to get non-targeted traffic to your website. You can sort it out later in your sales funnel or list. You may also try traffic exchange and safe list for better results. Hope this help.

Hi,
I don't understand when you say " I can't afford to build backlinks". It's not like you have to pay to get all your backlinks!! well maybe u pay your time... but if you can't afford to pay time, then pay the money.

I think there are only 2 things you may have to do:
1. Pay for Traffic
or
2. Build high quality backlinks to your posts.

Now choose from the 2 options and you get traffic.

The advice is to focus on target audience and work to retain it on your website.
Make sure that your users get the best UI and UX
Check that on-page SEO factors are taken care of.
If to speak about off page SEO, post on blogs / forums that relate to your website niche and can get you target visitors.
Social media strategy is an important part of the digital marketing plan as well.

You can get a lot of free traffic from Twitter if you have a reasonable following (which you can build up in a few weeks if you spend about 10 minutes per day on it).

Depending upon your niche, you may be able to get traffic from communities such as growthhackers or reddit, but you have to be careful to build a reputation in them by being helpful, and not just post your own stuff.

In terms of backlinks, you can build a lot of Web 2.0 backlinks for free, from places like YouTube, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, Slideshare. They are not necessarily as powerful as backlinks from relevant normal sites, but they are free and they do help.

Something that I am using right now and it is getting crazy amounts of traffic, anywhere from 200 visitors to 5k in a single day, is using reddit to promote your links.

Yes you can get traffic directly from social networks but chances are that you will have to work fairly hard for it - posting stuff continually.

You can also do so by paying for social network traffic i.e. Facebook Ads.

I personally have found that building quality links to my site can get my continuous traffic for years BUT it will take time to materialize.

And yes, you need to have a budget to build those kinds of links.

If you can't afford paid traffic, then focus on writing at least 1-2 quality posts per day using long term keywords that are easier to rank. When the first money comes, invest for more traffic.

total cost would be $10 easily peezy ranking for you for long tail keywords

What do you mean? there are plenty of free options for building backlinks.. You don't need to spend if you don't want to... on the matter of traffic, social media is just the way to go now... that and buying them from sources like webtrafficgeeks or fiverr, but that's up to you.

You can use your content rich blog to make videos, and pin each on Pinterest. You can share your blog on TUMBLR or REDDIT as well. Depending on your niche these methods may get you some extra traffic. You always have the option to buy solo ads if you can find the right sellers. I am currently working on a blog post about the best sellers which I plan to use in all the aforementioned methods

If you dont have a budget for getting traffic to your site, I would suggest getting a free Social Adr account. It will allow you to share other people's posts in return for them sharing yours.

Won't make a huge difference but it will increase overall rankings since your website will have social activity.

I think you should push more content on Social example on Facebook, Twitter, G+, Instagram,...With this way, you still don't need the backlinks, however if your contents are high quality enough, many people will share them for you, then your website will get a lot of traffic and also brand awareness. I think so.

Hate to play the devil's advocate here but in order for people to share your content (even if it is good), you need to show your content to them.

That won't really happen until your website already has traction on social networks.

It is a catch 22 situation IMO.

Social Media sites are helpful for making your business a big brand among the viewers, but you need to present your business features in an effective manner so that they can be dragged towards it automatically.
