You can look at bounce rate til your blue in the face.. There simply is more to the overall picture than that number alone. Not something you can probably answer.. but are the people coming to your site, and getting what they are looking for? are they reading your material and still wanting more?

Basically if they are going to your site from Google, and then going back to the serps and clicking another link in the serps they found you in.. that's a bounce. if they are reading your material and decide they want to refine what it is they are looking for..that to would be a bounce.

HOWEVER... if they are a returning visitor to your site, the bounce may still count, but not by as much. There are simply sites that have higher bounce rate than others. I have a few wordpress related sites that offer tutorials etc.. they get what they are looking for and, they are off and running. My return visitor rate is in the 30% to 40% range for most of those sites. In those cases I am not concerned with the 70%+ bounce rate.

If my other sites where that high.. I would be concerned.

Most websites will see bounce rates fall somewhere between 26% & 70%. The average bounce rate for the websites in my sample set was 49% approximately . The average bounce rate for all visits in the set was 45%. I threw out the outlines, the 1% bounce rates. The highest bounce rate was 90.2%; the low was 27.33%. The low across all was 1.23%.

Surely it must depend on the purpose if the content being searched for? For instance if I search for "where to buy •••" or "how long does it take to •••" then it will take literally seconds to find my answer.

Bounce rates are different for each industry & the type of website you have. For example, if the site is just collecting leads and has only a few pages with visitors not really interested in other content on the site, the bounce rate will be high.

In other industries which the users are passionate about, they will keep browsing pages, reducing the bounce rate.

74% is a bit too high in my opinion though.

    Dumb responses.

What if I he is trying to get people to click on an affiliate link? A higher bounce rate would be good then if that is what people are doing. Or what if the page is designed to generate a phone call? If it is converting, the bounce rate might look high, but so what?

It really depends on the site and what you are trying to do.

There are plenty of really great sites with high bounce rates. I'm sure Wikipedia's bounce rate is really high. They seem to be doing okay.

If it's a blog then 70% is the usual, but always try to keep people click 1 more page to lower it.

      Why?

If they click one more page, what does that do?

I believe the 'optimal' value is not applicable here as it`s extremely individual and depends on the purpose of any exact page. As has been mentioned - one can be an affiliate or the page may be transitional which would actually presuppose the bounce, finally, a page may have nothing to interact with really.

In case your page presupposes some further interaction - try analyzing your navigation and layout, also check the corellation of keywords and pages ranking for them - perhaps some pages may not be perfectly relevant to the best performing keywords.

Bounce rate can tell you whether your visitors are finding what they want when they arrive at your site, and whether they're interested enough in your content to explore your site further. Decrease it by posting unique and quality content, Improve site loading Time.

    Hello mitaliseo,
To reduce bounce rate you should follow these steps..
    1.
    Improve Website Speed
: Important factor that is highly contributing to website bounce rate is website speed. If your website takes more than 5 sec to load, then be sure you will loose your potential customer as they will quit without seeing your website. Website speed is a critical factor and you should made all possible measures that to make it faster.

    2.
    Avoid Pop-ups
: Too many ads, videos and content in the form of paragraph are few things which are annoying, no one likes them and most often visitors leave the page immediately. To avoid pop ups offer visitors a better user experience and make proper balance between revenues and user experience.

    3.
Focus on Clean and Intuitive Navigation :
Clean website structure and menu is very important in order to keep user attention on your business . Use breadcrumbs and page navigation to take them in right direction.

    4.
    Elements that Increase Website Value
: Website credibility plays a important role while creating everlasting first impression. To leave first impression good and make your website trustworthy you must add the elements like reviews, testimonials, privacy policy etc.

    5.
    Attention Grabbing Headlines
: Having a short and to the point headline is important in order to make your audience realize that they are on the right page. It should be eye catchy to attract visitor and make them eager to know more about your product and services.

You have a way better bounce rate than mine. LOL. But I do have pages that have bounce rates at 70-75%, but I have terrible bounce rates in most pages at 80%+. But wow, reading the comments below, you guys have bounce rates at <50%, wow. That's pretty much awesome. Now, something's not right here. Sigh.

Bounce Rate is the ratio of number of visitors that who walk away from your website after seeing only one page to the total number of visitors who visited your website. You should desire to keep your bounce rate as low as possible in order to get better rankings in Google Search Engine.

As a thumb rule, generally, the bounce rate between 26 to 40 percent is considered to be excellent for your website. 41 to 55 percent is good and anything above it should be considered as a poor.
