Question about backlinks

When I look to see how many backlinks my competition has I get two results.

If I check the entire website I might see 500 backlinks.

If I check the page that comes up in my google search, that specific page might only have 5 backlinks.

Will my keyword be competing against the entire website or just the page.

    BOTH.

The web is made up of pages - but the links to it come from pages that have links to them.... etc.. etc...

So the internal links to that page may carry a lot of weight, as well as the external ones.

Just assume you need to do more than you think and you should be good to go.

It boils down to entire site vs. entire site.

Google "plays" with which pages it shows up for the given site to see which ones are more sticky - more beneficial to users.

Also don't forget that it is more than just the raw number of backlinks. It is the authority they carry. Is it a relevant content driven link? Does it come from a high PR site? Is it nofollow (Only applies to Google)? Is it from an .edu or .gov site? (They carry more authority from everything I have read)

The number of links is only part of the equation. Find relevant, content driven links from authority sites that are well respected by the search engines. Then get more of them than the competition has

I believe in overwhelming force LOL Bigger guns, better ammo and more of all of it.
