Which internal page to link to?

Hi guys,

my situation is this: We have a yoga company and currently serve 3 cities, so we have three local landing pages that we are optimizing for ranking.
1. www.abc.com/la
2. www.abc.com/sf
3. www.abc.com/nyc

One of our main efforts is link building through gust posting.

So if we want to rank these pages 1-3 how much more impact does it have if the inbound link points to that specific landing page vs the main domain www.abc.com?

Thanks,
Fabian

Best is to link those links to your homepage and then let it pass juice to those landing pages.

Your links need to point at the exact URL/page you're trying to rank.

You'll lose link authority when you have a buffer page between the backlink and the page you're trying rank.

Also remember, followed links are the only links worthy for ranking pages and the backlink page needs it's own followed link profile. Backlinks on pages with no authority won't rank any pages.

    No.

All that does is rank the Home page which isn't OPs goal. The links passing through the Home page will be diluted by the time they reach the internal city pages. They might see some movement on the SERPs for the internal pages but they'd get more authority flowing into the internal pages by building links directly to the page/s they're trying rank.

    Thanks guys!

So what about if my partner and I are both creating backlinks. Would it then be better to have 100% on the "buffer page" or 50% on each local landing page? Which would boost the ranking for the local pages best?

50% on each local landing page would be benificial to rank the local landing pages.

Haha I try to, did I miss something?

I got your point that it is more effective to have 1 backlink pointed to the sub-page, than 1 to the mainpage, if I try to rank that sub-page.

What I am asking now is: Would it also be more effective to have 1 backlink on the sub-page vs 2 backlinks on the main page. Different situation.

More generally how does the link juice flow from a sub-page to another sub-page vs from the main page to a sub-page?

        Thanks!

I think what I am trying to understand is how much link juice is passed on for example from abc.com/la to abc.com/sf vs from abc.com to abc.com/sf?

You link to the page that best matches the content you are linking from. If it is generic and not geared to a particular city, then spread them out between the three pages you want to rank higher.

Thanks, but the two sentences are kind of contradicting themselves!?

If according to the assumption, that I should link to the page that best matches the source content, then for a generic source (e.g. a nation wide yoga blog) I would not link to any specific city page, but the generic landing page, no?

      thanks!

No, if it is generic and you are trying to rank three different pages that are not the home page, you should split your link building efforts between those three pages (i.e. guest post #1 to local page #1, guest post #2 to local page #2, guest post #3 to local page #3, guest post #4 to local page #1, guest post #5 to local page #2, guest post #6 to local page #3, etc.)

Sure, that's fine if you want to only spread a percentage of the link's "power" to each page of your website. The authority from that link will be split between every page that you link to from the home page, weakening the effect it will have on the individual pages you are really trying to get to rank. It's better than no link at all but the OP was asking for the best way to boost the rankings of three individual pages, not the whole website.

Keep linking from one page to another. That way it wont matter to which pages you are building direct links.

if you had a really quality contents and want to rank on google TOP I recommend optimizing your pages, interact with reputable sites (PR DA PA TF high CF), there are more forms to diversify backlink from web 2.0, video upload, file sharing, important is social bookmarking. finally if you want long-term development, be sure to use PBN, it is quite risky and expensive but highly effective.
