No offense but If you're clueless about SEO, just build the pages.

The thing about SEO is you will never know what's possible to rank until you actually jump in and try to rank a page and that all starts by first building the webpages. To a certain extent search engine competition is irrelevant, it matters but it's not a deal breaker for any niche.

Nothing is written in stone for SEO, you can always go back later on and edit a webpage and build followed backlinks If the page doesn't rank.

You will rank for a variety of longtail keywords regardless. They might be one hit wonder keywords but you will still rank and tracking that data can help you build better pages for better traffic keywords over time.

    [edit]

When I'm busy but I plan on targeting a niche I just build the webpage, throw it up there for Google to index and see where it lands on the SERPs. This way when I have time to work on the project I already have a head start, the page is already indexed with relevant text, even If I decide to target better keywords later on.

    Build the pages.

One of the best keyword research tools is Google Autocomplete. Google gives us a list of suggested queries to help with our search. These suggested queries can ideas on how people are using our targeted keywords. From here, you'll find additional topics and gain insight on how people search using these keywords.
