Using a "no display" tag?

I'm using an animated header that includes my headline. Because it's javascript the search engines won't see my headline and h1 keywords.
So is it all right to follow the javascript with this:
<div style="display: none;"><h1>My Headline Here...</h1></div>
This will show the search engines my headline but visitors will only see my animated header. But I'm a little worried that this may sound an alarm or even get me penalized. I mean, what's to stop someone from using this method to excessively pad their webpage?
