File Extension and SEO

Does file extension affect SEO? I want to start using SSI so I can make my templates more efficient by using include files for my header, footer, sidebar, etc.

So my page file extensions will be "shtml" or "php" if I go that route. I know this may be a silly question, but it seems there are always things Google doesn't like and counts against site ranking. I just want to be sure.

Thanks,
Phil

Since no one replied, I'd like to add a followup question.

Can search engine spiders crawl code that is inserted using SSI? It seems to me they would be able to, but again I want to be sure before I change my template.

By the way, I bought the XFactor report and I'm trying to get my template finalized. I have a few sites under my belt, and using includes in my template will really help.

    Thanks,
    Phil

Looks like I'm having a conversation with myself here.

I found that I can use the htaccess file to allow me to use SSI with html extension instead of shtml, so that's all set.

Still wondering if anyone knows if the spiders crawl code inserted with Server Side Includes.

Yeah, I do that most days myself

In answer to your question I don't believe the extension matters at all. Whatever the source, your site is presented to the web browser in HTML. This is what Googlebot sees.

Excellent. I figured that was the case, but I wanted to be sure. Since I'm just getting started, I didn't want to handicap myself with my own template.

I've used htaccess with html extensions in the past. I've read nothing about the file extensions making a difference though. The lack of replies here is probably because no one really knows...

The extension you use for your Web pages has absolutely zero impact or effect on your site's SEO. Use whatever extension you want and feel most comfortable with.
