Should I switch my http site to https?

Has anyone seen the benefit of doing this in the last 6 months from an SEO standpoint?..

Well here's a post by Barry Schwartz from 2014 Google Starts Giving A Ranking Boost To Secure HTTPS/SSL Sites
maybe that will help you decide.

There is no real ranking boost.

If you ask people to login or give personal data, you need it. If not, you might (and should) suffer.

    That's not a rankings boost.

Https/http choice doesn't have a strong correlation with rankings. Moz found this out in 2015: https://moz.com/search-ranking-factors/correlations Agreed with Paul, if you don't store personal data, there's no point in https.

Hi Ants - I wouldnt have expected it to make an impact in a 2015 survey but we are now in 2017 where google has stated a rankings boost for https and 70% (approx) of page 1 results are now https.

paulgl - I provide a service where people can enquire and leave their details for us to call them back. details include name, tel number, email etc. so would that count as a good reason for https?

Mostly for credit cards and the like. But yes, personal info like that is also included.

If google detects you are collecting personal info, especially from a form, you probably should get it. That does include phone, address, etc. But that's second level, so to speak. I would still do it.

If you require a password, cc, bank account, etc, you 100% need it.

First of all ask yourself this whether your site needs any money related transactions and/or the need of password for personal information?? If not then its unnecessary.

I believe Google said it can help with certain query's. If I had to guess (and this is a guess) maybe some e-commerce queries where an SSL cert would really matter.

If you are not asking clients about some sensitive data then its not necessary to use HTTPS but I like the secure sign so I use it but it does not have any real impact on the rankings.

Websites that are needed to be protected like log-in info, money related transactions, e-commerce, online gaming sites etc. these sites requires SSL encryption for the safety of users and clients.

Before I would have agreed with others who said only if there is a transaction going on or people putting in their information.

In January 17' though google chrome users will see a "not secure" in their browsers though if site is not on SSL.

That said, I wouldn't say it will give you a rankings boost (initially you will probably drop until 301 kicks in).

All new websites though I would DEFINITELY start with SSL, everything from local businesses to personal blogs, doesn't matter.

    Just my opinion.
