Pros/cons of using a subdomain for your blog

Most of the blogs i have been reading have the blog in the root folder or in a /blog folder. I never see blogs in the subdomain (blog.domain.com). I am looking to start a new blog but I want to host the blog on it's own server and in order to do this I would have to use a subdomain in order to point the dns record to the server.

My question is does it hurt rankings for your main domain when you use a subdomain for your blog? For example does link juices not flow to your main domain when links are going to your subdomain?

Thanks!

Sub-domains are considered as separate domains by the search engines when it comes to SEO. So, you will have to create a separate link profile for it.

In that case what is the best way to host the blog on its own server while benefiting from backlinks to the blog to the main domain?

Most people just create a separate Database in the server and put the blog in it.

Pros - The link to your main site url in post will be considered as the backlink
Cons - Will miss most of the value like website updation due to posting content, and since each post will be considered as a page on main site.

I would just put the blog as a subdirectory in the same server. It is inline with the website. I can benefit from the same website links and also from domain authority, trust flow and all.

Wheras google considers sub domains as seperate websites.

As others have stated, you will lose all authority flow from the subdomain to the main domain and vice-versa. You can link to the main domain, but the content between the two are parts of two completely different websites.

The only advantage I have ever been able to ascertain for a subdomain blog is if the blog or the main domain is penalized, the penalty does not affect the other one.

The advantage of putting the blog in a directory is authority gained from the main domain or the blog will flow back and forth from one another.

Bottom Line: If at all possible, a blog should always be in a folder of the main site. Sometimes, it just can't be done and if that's the case, a subdomain is better than nothing.
