Sorry if this question is old hat but I have only recently began to focus on links. I have mainly been writing articles to get back links then I read that an easy way to get links is to post comments on blogs and there is free software to find the right blogs. This seemed too easy to me, why even bother writing articles if you only want links? My question, Is a link in a comment to a prominent blog equal to a link to an article directory? Assuming blog and directory are both same page rank. Also news articles. If you post a comment on a prominent news article lets say on the Los Angeles Times online how well would that link be treated by with google. Surely, not as well as if your link was in the actual article?

They're not equal. In an article you'll be able to control the context in which the link was placed (more-so than a blog comment anyway). Also, G definitely knows the difference between an article link and a blog comment, I'm sure they take that into consideration. Do both: A diverse link profile is an effective one.
