Co-incidence or what?

I have two websites

a) one hosting my website - which ranks #1 position for chosen key phrase.
b) second one hosting my blog

I decided to create a new e-book for my website.

70 per cent of the E-book content is on the blog.

The E-book was then posted to my main website.

That was one week ago.

Now competitors website has taken #1 position. Is this a pure co-incidence or because of
a duplicate content issue?

    It may be coincidence... if it is a duplicate content issue, have you filed a formal complaint?

    If both pages have the same content (i.e. content of the book), then YES, Google will issue duplicate content penalty, and cut your ratings.

    There are 2 practical solutions:
    1. remove the content of the book from one page and leave the link to the other page;
    2. leave the content but add the canonical-tag inside <head> of one of the pages. Page without this tag will be displayed in search results.
