Link Building - Can't seem to get it to work.

I've been working hard on building links for a particular site and have done all the "stuff" I should be doing like blog commenting, forum commenting, social bookmarking, video submissions etc but when in Google, I use the links: search in Google it doesn't show any of the links in any of those places that have been placed over the last 2 months. What am I doing wrong?

    The only thing you are doing wrong is using Google to search for links. It will never show all of your links

    Go to Yahoo.com and in the search bar, enter site:yourdomain.com

    Much more accurate

    WIth that said, Link checkers are a lot like the news. They only report half the truth...and that half is half accurate

    Focus more on your movement in google. When building links, your sites will dance a lot...don't worry...this is normal

    I use the free rank checker tool by Seo book to keep track of my rankings

    I agree with Mark, use yahoo and search, even if they are not there now they may show up later in the week or next just keep your eye on the look out.
    Don't rush it all at one time you do not want to get in the "sandbox"

    Look at your competitors backlinks. You know they are being counted for sure. Copycat them.

    I have noticed a lot of the old backlink sources not working as well lately. If your site is still relatively new, pay somebody to get your link in 400 directories. I took a site 8 months ago to PR 4 with directory links and a paid yahoo directory spot. Other than that just a handful of article sites and a weekly blog post and digg. And a handful of social bookmark sites. mister-wong.com & hubpages(for a few choice keywords) <-- google liking these at the moment

    Two months isn't that long give your links time and they should help later.

      Look at your competitors backlinks. You know they are being counted for sure. Copycat them.
      When I tried this, I noticed that a lot of the comeptitor's sites links that were listed by Yahoo were actually 'nofollow'. How does that happen? Does Yahoo ignore nofollow or can this happen if the nofollow was added after the link was first created?

        Don't get too stressed up checking on how many backlinks you have or why they don't show up. Just keep on doing lots of backlinking to your site. Use Angela's backlinks, that's good resource for backlink building. Also submit many articles to Ezinearticles. They are the best.

    You have the right idea, but i would actually recommend a different utility from yahoo.

    Site Explorer - Yahoo! Site Explorer is what I use primarilly.

    The google "link" functionality is broken. Though, the one in google's webmaster tools is pretty good for seeing how google views your backlinks.

    Google webmaster tools never worked for me. It does show a single backlink even though i have thousands for several sites..

    Although backlink checking is not its primary purpose, I find that Website value calculator and web information provides a much more realistic number of links to any site. It won't list them, but it will give you an idea as to how fast they are growing.

    I agree the others that looking for your links in Google is not good use of your time. Focus on your site's movement instead.

      I just tried that for one of my sites that has over 250 links indexed and it says I have none!

        Hmmmm... According to Google, microsoft.com has 54K links. According to websiteoutlook it has 64 million. So it clearly has a better idea. I don't know how many links one of my sites has, but websiteoutlook says a few hundred whereas Google says 2!

        I don't think there is a reliable way to know for sure unless we build our own spider. Anyone have $100 million in venture capital to spare??

    This has been very helpful and I have re-focused my attention just to my daily routine and not checking every 5 minutes to see how popular I am becoming.

    I'm not sure if the popular kids in high school actually checked to see how many people wanted to be their friends every 5 minutes. They just kept doing what they were doing and stayed popular. Now they're mostly fat and bald but that's for another time LOL.

    On a side note: what's the best way to tell if a link is a follow or no-follow link?

    hi there when i go to yahoo.com and type in my website is that number " ## results for" the number of backlinks. This number is pretty high compared to the google check. help. Also is there a certain number of backlinks to shot for to at least have a good high ranking page with plenty of traffic or does it depend on the website itself?

      I've been using Yahoo site Explorer exclusively for awhile now... BUT if Google can't "See" your backlinks then are they even helping you rank higher within Google?

      I'd think not.. Your Yahoo ranking will increase but your Google rankings will not. I've got a site with a couple hundred google links and a few thousand yahoo links.

      Needless to say I rank quite a bit better in Yahoo than Google.

    Sometimes you have to wait a while for Google to find the links especially if said link does not have any PR or high googlebot activity or top class niche content to go with links. Hopefully you used text anchor with niche keywords.

    Try to get links on various High PR TLD domains. Try ones with not so much links on them already so your link gets more link juice to pass onto your site.

    Instead of just commenting try starting a few threads based on niche keywords even ones without much traffic and build on that. Any keyword will do but make sure it has a long tail (3 or more words in it) and that all keywords are found on your site or in your site's domain name and/or site title.

    Did u check to make sure the forms or blogs that u post are do follow?

    Or have u checked your competitors' performance?

    SEOBOOK or SeoQuake toolbars for firefox... it's all you need

    aside from that, you need to give it time. there are about a trillion other websites out there and a busy work force of virtual assistants in Inda busting out backlinks taken from magical pdf documents, google is a busy bot.
