Proper Domain Redirect for SEO

We have an original Website that we have been performing SEO on for 3 years. It was time for a new Design and we recently created a new design and developed it under the sub domnain: newsite.mydomain.com (example).

Now that the new website design is ready to go live we added a 301 Permanent Redirect (in cPanel) for mydomain.com to redirect to newsite.mydomain.com

Is this appropriate for SEO intentions?
What about the original Website?
Does original Website remain in Google index?
Is it considered Duplicate content now?

We don't want to lose all the SEO performance.

Thanks!

Why in the world would you put the new design on a subdomain? Why not just put it on the original domain?

You will be OK with your Original Domain. I think redirection is not a good practice if you have another option. You should stay on your original domain.
    Thanks, Mytechgoal.

Redirection is the process of forwarding one URL to a different URL. There are three main kinds of redirects: 301, 302, and meta refresh.

Try to avoid 301 redirects if possible. I know it's not always easy, especially if it's a link on another site that you can't control. If you do use 301 redirects make sure you don't create redirect chains.

While it really is a weird move, I`d say that the subdomain should get some juice from the redirected domain, however, you should expect some instability in terms of rankings. And once it`s stable again - you may not re-gain the same positions you had (if the website was actually ranking well before). Yet, as you`ve set the permanent redirect - there should be no issues with duplicate content. Same way, due to redirect, the domain won`t disappear from indexes at once, but Google will figure out in a while which version you intend to rank, and shouldn`t rank the redirected pages.
