Hi! I would like to get your insight and advice on a KW ranking issue we are currently experiencing. We are working with a few high volume KW to improve site traffic. Our ranking tool shows that we are on page 1 for Sydney and surrounding areas on quite a few of the KW we are optimizing. But when one of our associates checked a couple of the KW on google, it showed us on page 9. The fella who did the test was located in Terrey Hills which isn't that far from CBD.

The ranking tool is showing our competitor on page 1 as well and it's consistent with actual testing. We know it's not browser customization because we tried it on IE Mozilla with Google off.

What's causing this discrepancy? Is there a specific Google factor affecting the ranking? How can we fix this?

Thank you so much for your help!

Hi! thank you so much for replying. we're using serpfox. All the other keywords that we are using are okay. It's just a couple that are showing we are on page 1 at serpfox. But when it was googled by one of our associates in Terrey Hill, we were on page 9.

But when we check it within CBD the results match up with serpfox. ???

Hi! We are using serpfox. For some reason we are only having this problem for a couple of the KW. For the rest Seprfox and google appear to be showing the same data.

And one other odd thing is that when the KW's we're googled within Sydney CBD, they were on page 1 just as it showed on Serpfox. But when another person tried it practically at the same time in Terrey Hills it was on page 9,

Terrey Hills is only under an hour away.

An hour is huge in terms of Google's algorithm. If you do a Google search for a restaurant does it make sense to show you results that are an hour away? No, of course not.

I assume you have the location in the keyword tracker set to Sydney, so Serpfox is showing you the right result. It sounds like you are frustrated that Google results can differ significantly between locations.

The thing that is causing the discrepancy is Google's algorithm and the way it handles locations. It is the nature of the game.

Ranking go up and down, it is the average you should be looking at.

      Hi!

what we find strange is that it was done at practically the same time. One was in Sydney CBD and the other was in Terrey Hill and the results were different.

We have seen ranking go up and down but nothing like this when it's searched at the same time just from different locations.

No they don't. All they are doing is scraping data from Google.

    For rankings, not really.

Sure rankings can fluctuate. Page 1 to page 9 is not a fluctuation though.

To the OP, there can be a few things causing this. It could be an error with SERPFox. They've had loads of errors in the past. I stopped using them a long time ago.

That is unlikely though. If anything, it would be more likely that SERPFox is not picking up the higher ranking and would show you ranking lower than you actually are versus showing a false positive result.

There is no such thing as a static SERP anymore. Location can play a role in rankings and different people in different locations will see different results. Page 1 to page 9 is a pretty big difference though. Really about the only thing that would cause that is if the business was a local business like a dentist or a plumber. Google knows that those businesses just serve their local community and they will rank in that area, but not rank at all or rank much lower in other towns.

Another possibility is that there is something like an image or video ranking on page 1 from your site that SERPFox is picking up but your friend is missing when he checks the rankings.

Have you manually checked the rankings yourself to confirm the page 1 ranking?

Most keyword tools completely bypass local listings on Google SERPs because the local/pack listings are javascript while the organic/global listings are plain text. You can prove this by turning off javascript on your browser and doing a local Google search.

Still, page 1 vs page 9 is extreme even for a keyword tool. Is it live data or dated?
