        Social bookmarking is a waste of time. It won't help you to rank, so do as many as you want. Won't make a difference.

    There is not set number. It all depends on the keyword phrase and what the top pages have for backlinks. You should get as many of the backlinks as you can that the top 10 ranking pages for the targeted keyword phrase have. That is where you start - getting the same links your competitors have.

    NOTE: If you can place the link yourself, don't bother. It is likely worthless.

        Pretty simple. With few exceptions (like PBNs that you, personally own), the only links that are worth getting are ones where another website owner has to make a conscious decision to link to you. You either get those by asking for a link or by creating something that they allow to be placed on their website (like a guest post or an infographic).

        That means that things that you can easily place yourself like directory links that accept anyone automatically, blog comment links, social bookmarking links and forum links are a complete waste of time for SEO (they might bring you a trickle of traffic, though). Most are nofollow links, anyway, and search engines know that you can place them, yourself, so they ignore them.

        No doubt, you will see all kinds of people on this forum promoting those links that you can easily place yourself. Without exception, none of those people have ever ranked a site for anything in a moderately competitive niche. They are just parroting things they have heard that used to work more than a half decade ago.
