I see practically every SEO article recommending Yoast. However, when I check the websites recommending it (if they run on WordPress), 9 out of 10 don't use it.

Why is that?

I thought it's something similar to HostGator (everyone recommends it, because it has the biggest payouts for affiliates, but only newbs and inexperienced people would use it - and if I see a site recommending HG for hosting, I automatically deem them untrustworthy).

I get what you're saying about affiliates but the Hostgator comment is nonsense, especially considering HG is average as far as affiliate commission.

BTW, I've used Hostgator for years. It's a host just like anyone else.

The yoast thing is mostly parrots that don't know SEO, they read it on a blog/forum, it must be real.

One of the bigger sites that also recommends it multiple times is Backlinko.

However, there's no trace of Yoast on his website or any other SEO plugin.

About the HostGator - the hosting itself is OK, but their support... I literally waited 3 months for them to responds to my ticket. And I nagged them multiple times. I'd rather stop working on sites that use HG again.

I think Yoast is recommended as it is simply the most accessible tool for people who are not SEO experts, with a wealth of information available on how to use it. As you become more familiar with SEO and how it works you will naturally discover your own preferred tool(s) and go from there.

I never ski on green slopes anymore because I'm experienced enough to hit the blacks, but I'd always recommend people who have never skied start on the greens.

Not at all - there are literally hundreds of blogs, articles and even entire independent websites that are dedicated to explaining how to use Yoast

    Hey ZenDot,

I wouldn't look at it like that with yoast. IMO it's a great plugin for what it's intended for and makes some things extremely easy. The thing is a lot of people don't really know how to use it properly.

You really don't have to spend any money with Yoast (as opposed to HG) everything you need is free.

I have many different money sites and I don't use the paid version of yoast for any of them and I don't feel it necessary.

All I really use it for is to optimize my meta's, noindex the categories/date/author/tag archives (depending on the site) and anything else that I might need for that site.

It also has other features that make things super easy like being able to verify google (and bing I think) webmaster tools from inside your dashboard.

Yoast is a genius at marketing his brand, and that is it! Is Pizza Hut better then all other pizzas because of their brand, hell no they are not, and yoast in my opinion is over-rated, and no better or worse then all-in-one-seo, in the end, yoast just has better branding/marketing skills.

I personally prefer All in One SEO Pack. It was one of the original WordPress SEO plugin. Basic but it works.

Yoast is primarily useful if you're new to SEO and need a lot of built in pointers. It's also quite a heavy plug-in subsequently and you don't want to slow your site down with too many plugins.

If you just need something to easily optimize your content (note that nowadays, optimization is only useful with good and relevant content) then All in One SEO Pack is your pick.

The debate between Yoast or All In One has been done hundreds of times before and they are essentially as good as each other. Most WordPress beginner guides use Yoast in their examples - which was the OPs original point - so possibly this leans in it's favour for those starting out.

Basically, I wondered, do we even need SEO plugins? Are they relevant?

Just check any big/branded site built on WP - chances are, they don't use any SEO plugins.

SEO plugins are, as far as I can tell, mostly and almost exclusively used by internet/affiliate marketers. Yet, many don't outrank sites that don't use any kind of SEO plugins.

That's why I'm wondering if they are even needed.

Really ZD, you may not need an SEO plug in. But a dyed in the wool, blogging newbie with zero experience in the SEO game, yep, they can use a plug in for dotting SEO i's and crossing SEO t's

I love it. Recommend it. Use it. Don't get paid to recommend it. For a few weeks - mind you I wrote helpful articles too - I ranked page 1 spot 3 on Big G for "how to submit a guest post" and "how to rank on page 1 of google" by getting all green checkmarks across the board with Yoast. Never sniffed Page 1 before that, save 1-2 times for light traffic keywords.
