Google Slap or Google Dance?

My latest site is about 2 months old now, it started off doing well:

- number 3 in the serps for its domain name ( i am not targeting this)

- and page 3 for the target keyword page i am trying to rank

I did some back linking and did not get very far - then i used Angela's pack and added about 30 links over a day or 2.

From there the site went to number one for its name and number 3 for the keyword - and i made some money

2 days later though disaster, page 60 or for the keyword and page 14 for the domain name!

Is this just the google dance? or have i been slapped for adding to many links with the same anchor text to quickly?

all the other pages have dropped too, Google does not seem to like my site right now. Its all a bit disheartening as i see random sites with irrelevant content massively outranking mine!

Should i have not added the links? if i have been slapped how long will this last!?

I have the same problem, actually. One of my sites has been as high as #8 in the SERPs but now it's toward the bottom of the second page. Another site of mine has been as high as #5 but is toward the bottom of the first page now.

So i should not have done so much link building? if anything i would have preferred my previous position rather than my now not even in the top 100!

you guys think its the slap then?

yes the reason why you flushed down to the page is that you don't have enough links. do some link building..

Sometimes ranking drops for a few days (sometimes weeks) then it bubbles back up again, be patient.

It's best to grow your incoming links slowly.

Caffeine, Google's new algorithm is also in the mix this definitely affects rankings.

I don't think you have built enough links to get any sort of slap personally. I think it has to do with google making some changes right now. I have one website that I haven't done anything on for quite some time now that is all of the sudden showing up for some pretty competitive keywords. I also notice that my website will go up and down for the first week or so after adding more links like you did. Everyone would be getting slapped if they were able to look as small as 30 links.

"Too many links with the same anchor text is not good for your ranking. Google thinks you're trying to link-spam them and they don't like it. Take it down asap if you will"

If that was the case then you could simply just create loads of links on the one site for your competition and then make it look like their spamming.

    Hi SarahCohen2010,

It's neither a "Google Slap" nor a "Google Dance". A Google slap applies only to AdWords advertisers when they have their Quality Scores lowered due to an issue with their advertising campaign. The Google Dance refers to when Google does a algorithm update or data refresh.

What you have experienced is the temporary benefit of the freshness factor (aka: QDF). Once this temporary boost in rankings wears off, your page will fall to it's currently earned position. It was good while it lasted, now it's time to start earning your way back up the rankings.

I've had sites that ranked 1st page of google for a given keyword mysteriously vanish completely from google - only to reappear after a couple days (one time it took a week) in a higher position than b4 it vanished.

I woudln't worry about it. Just be patient & keep building the links. I think their algorithm actually removes a url from the SERPS during a major re-index, from what I can tell.

      Hi Guys,

I would like to add something here...

I too have the same problem with a site I started a month ago... A lot of the terms I have are very easy to rank for.. the top ten competitors have 0-1 PR and most of them have 0 backlinks... the odd competitor may have 10 links at the most!

I was doing really well for some of the terms I optimized for on my site and then... I done some article marketing to build links to my pages. Then... just this Monday gone by... I noticed I got pushed way down the serps.. some of the terms are in the 100's... seriously buried! I have noticed over the few days as I keep checking my rankings every day, that some of my pages are not found in the index!

      So... WHAT THE HELL?

If I am competing against competitors that have very low competition levels... I mean.. extremely low... and I am ranking well one day... I get hit hard the next and I am four days buried deep in the serps with some of my pages gradually start to get de-indexed... then what do you say to that?

I am puzzled? And Pretty pissed off at the same time!

      What you guys think?

      Sean

        Hi Sean,

Search engines do not rank pages based on PR or the number of incoming links. This is easily verified by studying a handful of SERPs.

Pages are ranked primarily by relevance. If you want to outrank your competitors then build pages and promote them in a way that increases their relevancy score for your targeted keyword.

            Hi Sean,

Your experience is typical of what most folks see as a result of the freshness factor (QDF). Your new page gets a temporary boost from QDF and when it wears off, your page sinks to it's currently earned ranking without the temporary boost from QDF. In fact this is so typical that nearly all experienced webmasters are aware and expect it, and it only surprises relatively new webmasters.

              Hi dburk,

              thanks for getting back...

But what should I do now? Continue building backlinks? To my pages on the site? It almost seems silly as I have sufficient links to pages that should outrank my competition easily...

So what do you suggest? Continue to build links?

              Thank man,

              Sean

                Hi Sean,

Yes, build backlinks, also look carefully at all of your important page elements for any opportunity to tweak for a higher relevancy score.

It takes time for search engines to find and index all of your work, and it takes even more time for your pages and backlinks to earn trust rank value. Make sure you have plenty of links from relevant pages with targeted traffic and use relevant anchor text.

Search engine don't just count up backlinks and rank you based on the number they find. Each backlink is rated, weighted and scored. Focus on quality backlinks, links from relevant pages that rank well and have plenty of targeted traffic. You need far fewer quality backlinks, but massive amounts of low quality backlinks to be competitive.

I think, you have slapped. The reason is you have got more anchor text for same keyword. To over come this, try to get more backlinks via the same anchor text and different anchor texts, that will help you to recover once google indexed your backlinks....
