Linking out: towards pages about the same keyword VS towards complimentary ones?

Hello,

I tried to find the answer in articles, but I could not find it:

Linking out to other websites is good, but should you link out to a page that is about exactly the same keyword?

For example: my article is about 'self confidence tips', and I want to link out.
Is it bad to link out to an external page about 'self confidence tips'?

So should I link to a complimentary page, like 'assertiveness tips' or 'Tony Robbins'? Or even to a homepage instead?

    You do not need to link out at all.

    If you are going to link out, just remember that any page you link to is going to receive a boost from your link. If you are in direct competition, you are helping them to beat you.

      That is a misconception.
      All the big SEO blogs reccomend Linking out (Based on research).

        Not the ones that give good advice, and none of them can show an actual impact on rankings from linking out versus not linking out.

            That's all great, but we are talking about SEO here.

            We are not talking about linking out because maybe you will get lucky and link to someone that can bring a larger opportunity to you.

    Link out to respected, trusted self improvement or personal development sites, like Positively Positive. Think less about specific keywords and more about the full body of work on the site.

      I just link out, and I email to those sites that I did it because I am a fan.

      Then, some of these sites, will return the favour naturally without me asking.
