I created a site a few weeks ago and it instantly ranked #2 on Bing and Yahoo for my keyword without any backlinks and is getting traffic. Google however is a different story. The site started ranking on page 2, now it's moved up to position 5 on page 1.

I haven't built any backlinks yet or added any content besides one short paragraph (couple of sentences) and 2 images and a contact form.

Since it's working it's way up Google without backlinking should I leave it alone or should I add a few links to get it to #1 faster?

You should create some good links so that you can rank even more better. And if your site is ranking good already without any effort then why you want to leave it?

Well I'm not 100% sure if getting backlinks to the site will get it to #1 any faster or not. So right now I've only done on-page SEO which seems to be working great.

It's temporary, it will hit the ground. It happens a lot of times. You've to include as much content as you can to keep it on top position. Otherwise, it won't stay there. Perhaps, after 1-2 months, it will lose its position.

And, it will be very difficult to get it back on page 1 if you won't upgrade it now.

Content isn't that important. I've held top 10 rankings for keywords with literally 3 sentences on a site before. I have another site that's ranking #11 with zero content right now. All low -medium competition keywords. I think having very good on-page SEO is doing it.

Strangely I had a site where it was ranking top 10 with nothing but a title tag, I added content and my ranking plummeted. So is having a lot of content really a ranking factor? I say no.

Every site I have ever created I've added as little content as possible, mainly for getting a good CTR on links. I like to keep things as minimalistic as I can.

Are you sure you are not just seeing personalized search results?

Send someone the keyword and URL and let them check what they see.

If you are ranking that highly that fast, most likley you are either seeing personalized results or the keyword is not competitive at all (and likely won't bring any traffic).

I'm using incognito mode. Getting quite a bit of traffic from several keywords that are ranking.

Google is really different, aside from algorithms there are also guidelines you need to follow.

I think only for a while, there is the possibility that the current real opponents have not appeared and you need to focus on building quality backlink if you do not want your site to fall free.

  • That's great to hear! I recommend being sure that you will be linking out to very strong and relevant websites and you should be goood!
