No if its a reciprocal link between just two websites Google can spot it and has tools to potentially discount it or penalized it. Do not know what the above posters is talking about but its false. Now if the exchange is done three or more way then it can be beneficial/

You link to link partners widget site and he links from another sports site he has (just examples) to your site then the links are not reciprocal and all look like one way links.

but if a link to you shows on the same site that is linking back to you that's a reciprocal link google can tag.

I think they can be beneficial if they are done for the right reasons.

If you just have a page of something like "Here are websites I like" and the site you are exchanging links with has the same, probably not very worthwhile. If done in great numbers, that can even bring about penalties.

Another bad example I have seen over the years is link exchanges within a line of business that typically only serves a local market. I've seen dentist offices organize a link exchange where an office in San Diego is linking out to other dentists in Portland, Dallas, Miami, Cleveland, and Philadelphia. That makes zero sense. Why would a dentist in Portland link to a dentist in Dallas and vice versa?

That is an example where the link exchange is clearly done for the sole purpose of trying to influence search rankings.

On the other hand, if I personally owned a business that had 4 locations with 4 different websites, those 4 sites are definitely going to share links.

  • No, I dont think so. Why would you like to give your link juice to someone? Plus google penalties. It can mess things up.

Yes, Link exchanges are seen by Google as votes of trust from one website to another, it also creates a mutual understanding between two website owners helping each other climb SERP ranks.

However, while indulging in a link exchange, make sure that,
    1. Your site does have too many outbound links. As this will drive traffic away from your URL thereby increasing your bounce rate.
    2. You are not exchanging links with a low quality site.
    3. Your inbound links are not spammy.

These are some factors which your should keep in mind while exchanging links with other sites.

Link exchange could be beneficial if the linkbuilding strategy make sense and has quality. So, the exchange must meet certain requirements: for example, it's recommended to diversified and distribute the links between as many websites as possible. It's better to get less backlinks but on more different websites than to get more backlinks from the same website.

Other important matter is to make sure that the websites that point to your own web are related to your contents. For example, if your website talks about diving, it doesn't make sense to have backlinks from a web which talks about home decor. Google have this in account, so you should do it too.

If the websites that point to your web are related, but are penalized by Google or have bad quality, in this case the link exchange it's not beneficial neither.

All depends on how you do the linkbuilding.
    Regards!

If link exchange is done logically then its fine.

Example, you write some article or blog and mention others website and information then link exchange is fine.

If other website is placing irrelevant links then it may harm your website performance.

Also, make sure the other website DA and PA is good also giving you Do-follow link.

    Cheers!

Do not do the link exchange for sake of backlinking only. Also, try to get the relevant website's backlink.

Well, if you engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites, this is in violation of Google's Webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site's ranking in search results.
Reciprocal link exchanges like -Link to me and I'll link to you- offer NO MASSIVE SEO benefit to YOUR site and Google says link schemes will NEGATIVELY impact your rankings.

Google did not intend on eliminating backlinks, they only wanted to limit the process of generating spammy links that will lead no place.
If you are talking about reciprocal link exchange then now it won't be beneficial anymore.
If you want to generate backlinks through guest blogging or guest post for your website, first you should double check the website you want the link to and be sure the backlinks are not spamming and relevant to the content that you are linking to, vice versa.
If you are linking your website to a spammy content website, your website won't rank any higher than the picked sites.
