How to do SEO for a website with Subdomains.

Hello everyone. I need some assistance. I have a website that have 20 sub domains. All the domain are added in the webmaster. And all have 999 keywords and links in their respected webmaster property. But now when i am trying to make back-links against those subdomains i-e www.free-subdomain.maindomain.com its not ranking and its actually getting poor.

Can anyone give me some details on sub-domain SEO and what are the new techniques in 2017 for such type of model.

    Sub-domains are considered as separate domains by the search engines so if you want to rank a particular sub-domain you will have to build links to it.

    You have to do SEO of a website with Subdomains as a seperate domains.

    Techniques are basically the same of for the domain itself. As mentioned above, search engine consider sub domains as different website and separate from the root domain.
    With sub domains you can rank your website multiple times on Google, for example.

    Don't try to rank individual sub-domains unless you're treating them as separate individual sites.

    Your problem likely likes within the way you're structuring your site. Plus it can simply take time too, I don't know how long you've been working on it but it's possible you just need to be patient.

    If you're treating each sub-domain as a separate site, Google will consider them all separate sites and they will require their own SEO in order to rank - with the exception of possibly getting a little authority and trust passed on from the main domain if you did good SEO work there.

    Ok and what about those thousands of links coming from the main domain to the sub-domain property. Is it a negative number in google search result evaluation. And suppose main domain is getting a link back from linkedin. So if i go out there and create a link for my sub property is it going to be a good practice.

    One more question. What happens when you create back-links for sub-domains ? Because when i go out there create a link for my sub-domains the link comes back to the main domain and the same domain. Is that a good sign or negative ?

    What i understood so far is that you have to create back-links for every sub-domain your main domain will certainly going to give some PR to your sub-domains however to rank them you have to create back-links for each one of them.

    What type of Back-Links ranks the Sub-domain ?

    This is tricky, When you are creating a link for your sub-domain. Search bots handles them differently.

    Example Suppose there is a link coming from linkedin to your main domain. What you can do is simply create a new quality post at linkedin and this time leave your sub-domain link but make sure that the content in that post relates only to your sub-domain content even the title of the post should have some similarity with your sub-domain content.

    I have a similar case but i'm not using sub domains. My categories are working like my subs. I have used different sitemaps.
