Hi, I just want to invest some money to SEO of my content project.

I see the next budget split:
- Link building on top-tier websites (the main investment)
- Guest post creation
- Technical SEO optimization of my project

What mistakes should I avoid?

Thanks.

    Hope it's your new project.
    My suggestions--
    1. Make content rich website
    2. Add value to your content
    3. In beginning build some basic link (manually, contextual, anchor text variation, different platforms, no bot or software)
    4. Track your competitors link profile
    5. Create guest post.
    6. Continue building links
This is my basic advice. If you don't have enough time you can invest and can hire a professional trusted service provider. Thank you

Your technical seo will cover all the needs of your content project because it can determine the success of your project. This will form the better performance for your target audience. Forget about building links and the redundant guest posting because you cannot achieve your goal by only doing these off page seo.

According to me, you should focus first on technical SEO of your project and optimize your website first before you proceed towards off-page activities. Lay stress on 'quality' of content instead of quantity and make sure it is fresh and unique and is something which keeps users engaged.

The BIGGEST mistake... Thinking you can hire someone to do what is in your best interest. The GREATEST investment you can make at this point is educate yourself on SEO, so that when you do hire someone to do this for you, #1 you know what to ask them to do, #2 You can check on the work done, and know it has been done. and #3 By default, a educated consumer is going to buy from an educated service provider.

I would start with this list: https://www.searchenginejournal.com/free-seo-resources/

Read up on Mike Lang, Cotton Grammer, and Alex Becker.. not suggesting you buy their product.. they have more than enough free content on the net to get what you need.

LinkedIn has a pretty decent premium course - first month free then like $25 a month after... it not super advanced, but its more than a just for dummies version.

My favorite resource out of all that.. is SEO by the Sea. Once you have an idea of whats going on in SEO.. you can compare this reference guide to when things took effect vs went live.. and then look at where the search engines are looking to go, and get an idea of when those changes may take effect... Kinda like an SEO crystal ball.

For keeping yourself updated with SEO, refer websites like SEJ, SEL and Yoast. These are to be named as few while you can find more when you search for the same.

I agree with the other suggestions, but Yoast.. not at all. They define SEO as it pertains to thier plugin.... Granted the plugin has some benefits.. but there are also many limitations. Dont get me wrong.. on some of my Wordpress sites, I do have this installed... Its great for adjusting the mechanics of wordpress in terms of SEO structure and such.. but the advice they offer is a little lack luster beyond that.

Invest good money in top freelance writers for your guest posting campaign. Also, unless the writers themselves do placement, you'll either need to build bonds with top bloggers in your niche to open guest posting doors or hire consultants who have established bonds, to open doors for you. Guest posting rocks if you have your writing skills and bonds down. Or if you hire out to get the skills and bonds.

In going through this process I've learned a lot of lessons, but one of the most important lessons that I've learned is this: Picking good stocks (or keywords) typically isn't the hard part...being patient enough to hold on to them for the long-term, through the periodic ups and downs in the market (rankings) is the hard part.

The number one mistake people mess up with when hiring a SEO is not having them do keyword and competition research BEFORE hiring them to do ranking for their site.

Want to know if an SEO knows his stuff? hire him to do a cheap analysis of keywords and competition.

IT IS TEN TIMES more important than getting references.

If he can tell you how easily you can rank, what you have to do to rank IN THAT serp and show you why other sites are ranking AND can explain how he gets backlinks (in a non link spam way) then he probably knows what he is doing.

References only mean they ranked someone else's site in another niche but showing he/she knows how to compete in YOUR niche is far more important. Anyone can even by luck rank a site for something but a pro is someone who can walk into any niche or keyword result and knows what it takes to move the site up even against hard competition

SEO: You've heard about it. You know what it is (search engine optimization), at least on some level. And you've probably been advised at some point to pursue it as a marketing strategy. But for some reason, you haven't yet pulled the trigger.

Before you spend any money on a SEO I recommend that you do the following:

Figure out what keywords you're trying to rank for. What's the competition look like? And just as importantly, if ranked number one for a particular keyword phrase, how much traffic will you actually expect to get per month? Remember the number one spot in google only gets about 42 percent of the traffic. So if 1000 people are searching for a given keyword, on average the number one spot in google only received 420 visits.

Next, go sign up for Google search consul. It's a free tool that Google is made to help you understand how your ranking for Gary various keyword phrases.
    https://www.google.com/webmasters/verification/

Next, check out how your site does for download speeds. Again, Google has every tool to help you do this
    https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/

Next, Lower Your Bounce Rate. Google tracks what percent of people go to your page and leave without visiting any other pages. This is known as the Bounce Rate. High bounce rates are a strong signal to Google that visitors don't like your content and your site's rankings will plummet.
