Are domain numaes overvalued?

looking to buy domains, but in general, aren't they just overvalued? not you can do .biz .xyz etc.

      I guess what im really trying to say is could you buy an expiring domain whos already ranking for keywords you want to rank for and "plug in" your new website while maintaing the keyword rankings?

        no, an expired domain will lose any ranked keywords, over all the domain may have some DA/PA, but all the pages will be deindexed if the site is offline for a period of time. It may take less time for you to build the site up, needless to say, you are still building up a site that has already vanished from the search index, however, you still have couple advantages when building new content, your page may index quickly, and the site may be past the sandbox period that new sites are up against, thats about it....If you want to pick up where the domain is left off, then you have to buy the site, and the site be transferred over to you, otherwise, once the site expires, then anything that was on the site is of no value anymore, then you have to analyze the domain and make sure it has no bad backlinks....
