Greetings fellow warriors. Hope you're all having a good new year!

To be as brief as possible:

I am simply looking for some advice, suggestions, case studies, and whatever you can tell me about your experiences with ranking websites with TLDs/Domain Extensions like '.SPACE', '.SCIENCE', '.COMPUTER', '..DIRECTORY', etc, etc,.

What do we know for sure and what do we think we know about the few hundred new TLDs and how Google views them in comparison with .com/.org/.net

All things being equal Is it safe to say that a .SCIENCE website will rank just as easily as a .COM?

Anyway, as always, thanks for reading!

Regards,
DeveloperDan

I don't believe that Google views non-standard TLD's unfavorably. I doubt they get any more or less special treatment. But, there are so many more .com's and .org's out there as competition that it would seem like there is a disadvantage.

The downside to unusual TLD's is that it can be hard to remember, so you may be really limiting how many people go direct to your site.

You will still face the same challenges as other websites.

Yeah, I know. It's certainly a predicament. I think TLDs like .info, .tech, .guru and a few more are easier to remember but things like .morgage .technology .science .directory are exactly like you said, going to be hard to remember and some people won't even understand that it's a domain name. There's a large population of people that if they were told to visit it would type in www.example.directoy.com or www.example.science.com, etc. A lot of people don't realize there are TLDs out there other than .com .org .net.

      Anyway thanks for your answer!

To be honest never really looked... BUT if one were to search "Space" or "Science" or "Computer" or "Directory" how far back does one have to go to find the first instance of one of these TLD's being listed in the serps? And the answer.... further back than I was willing to search.

I actually find this a bit interesting... one would think to some extent there may be some amount of benefit... I did eventually find morning.computer on page 6 in the serps when searching "Computer Blog". - Ironically it is not much of a computer blog - as in not a computer blog at all... but an interesting read none the less LOL

So using the Serp's themselves as the guide.. I would suggest staying away like the plague LOL

Lol. Thanks for looking into it for me. This certainly depresses me and makes me hate domain squatters even more. Even tho I'd do it also if I had the money. Well anyway, thanks. I guess I'll have to come up with some creative .com. NOT that I have not already been looking for weeks. o/

      Thanks

I buy and build domain names all the time... if you think more about branding and less about trying to get the keyword into your Domain, its way easier to just pick a name and go. Aside form local SEO were exact match still shows signs of having benefit.. it really doesnt matter if the URL is Keyword .com/whatever vs branded name .com /keyword .

Thanks. I have known this deep down for a long time I guess my OCD just wants me to have as EMD or as an at least keyword in it. But you're right. I need to pick a name, do some branding, and it does not matter if the keyword is the in the domain name. Thanks for helping me get some perspective back.

I have not had any issues using any of these new TLD's. In most cases, I really don't think Google cares.

The only one I have had really mixed results with, and by mixed I would say mostly negative, are .xyz's. However, it kind of makes sense why Google may not like this particular TLD. They cost $.99 most places, and I have seen them even cheaper at different times. This attracts a metric shit-ton of spammers that are doing churn and burn or other spammy activities where they are just running through domain after domain.

It's tough to look in the SERPs and really be sure that just because you don't see a lot of them ranking that Google must look at them unfavorably. You have to remember that .com's, .org's, .net's, etc. had a 20+ year headstart and there are far more of them.

Actually "taking a look" I looked at a bunch of different TLD's not just the ones listed... one would think somewhere along the line that someone would know what they are doing in terms of SEO and have one ranked somewhere, and I really couldnt find one.

I do recall Cotton Grammer having an .xyz ranked for "Tokyo SEO" for a while... So we know its possible with the right amount of juice backing it all up. Obviously wasnt to practicle - its no longer listed. Just happened to notice in position 31 for "Tokyo SEO" there is a .expert. Probably the best placed "modern" TLD I have found in my looking.
