Any risks involved in removing a sub-domain from search index?

Hi all,

One of our sub-domains has thousands of indexed pages but traffic is very less and irrelevant. There are links between this sub-domain to other sub domains of ours. We are planning to take this subdomain completely. What happens if so? Google responds for this with a ranking change?

Thanks

Search engines considers sub-domains as separate domain. They rank for their individual link profile. From what you are saying the sub-domain isn't ranking much. So, its safe to say it is also not passing any good link juice to your other domains. So, yeah can take it down. I am sure hardly it will effect the others.

You'll loose all your links which would eventually effect your ranking

If backlinks are related to your main domain, then yes, there is a lot of potentials to effect on the negative way.

If not, then its like @expmrb said.

I agree with this. Maybe you should take a better look into your subdomains before removing them.

I would leave them up if they are not hurting your ranking.

Sub-domains are important for search as well. If you have not so good sub-domains and you remove them then you will not made a huge problem but if you already build your website with the certain sub-domains with a good rating then you should check this out before you made any wrong move.

Why would you need to remove it? I understand you are not receiving enough traffic, however how does it hurt to just keep it there.

Seeing that sub-domains are cheap or free, why not just keep it going?
I have found this is sometimes better than wondering what Google would do

  • If subdomain has many links which are indirectly or directly related to your domain then yes, it is going to impact your ranking when you eliminate your subdomain.
