Ranking drop in Google following development...

Hi all

Just a quick question... My website has dropped 4 places in Google (from #2 for my main keywords to #6) after some development... there has been no downtime, no change of anything, other than for 2 days we lost the pagination for my categories (which meant the site threw 6,000 404 errors) and when we realised we put it straight back. This was 5 days ago and just today our SERPS have dropped.

I'm assuming this is a delayed reaction/reason... how long do you think it may take if so to revert back?

Thanks

A lot of factors that may be out of your control can contribute to a change in rank. Google makes almost daily tweaks, they say, of their algorithm. Your competition may be very actively trying to move up too. You can do everything "right" and still see change.

It's hard to say when, or if, you will move back up any time soon. Just keep building links, improving your onpage SEO, try to keep your visitors on your site longer.

Also realize that listings fluctuate during the month as every site is crawled. It is not uncommon to see a site move up and down 2-3 ranking positions in a month as sites are crawled (it all depends on the niche and how competitive the targeted phrase is).

It's also possible that some of the backlinks you had were dropped by the sites they were on and also possible that some of the backlinks that were giving you a boost are now seen as questionable by Google and being ignored (not to mention that your competitors may have gained a few more links that Google likes). Even user engagement signals could cause your site to drop if they are not as good as the signals from the sites that climbed past you.

I'd give it several weeks to a month and see if things just don't bounce back. In the meantime, it never hurts to get more solid links.

Or... some competition stuffed Google with even more garbage than you

BTW, when G. moves you 4 pages back and not just 4 spaces, come back and tell us

There might be some competitors doing bad seo (toxic backlinks to your website), or Google is Dancing its algo.

Check your Google webmaster tools and disavow the toxic backlinks (if exist)

Google ranking is dynamic. When your site is crawled and finds that your 404 error has been fixed your site rank will improve.
