Remove Subsequent Pages of a Multiple Page Article From Search Results, and Should I?

Hi All,

Some of the articles on my website are split into multiple pages, for example:

http://www.mysite.com/15-of-the-best...l-destinations
http://www.mysite.com/15-of-the-best...destinations/2
http://www.mysite.com/15-of-the-best...destinations/3

This example has 3 pages. However, sometimes when checking Google for my site, it has indexed these /2 and /3 pages.

How can I prevent this? The pages are not duplicate content, so I'm not sure if using <link ref="canonical" would help in this situation.

Ideally it would only ever show the first page on an article in Google search.

And as a second note, what are your opinions on whether or not this is even an issue at all?

    You can certainly redirect to just one single page.

    Do you mean the 2nd and 3rd pages are outranking the 1st page or that all 3 pages are ranking but you only want the 1st one ranking?

      Only want the first one ranking. Well what makes more sense to a user? If you, as a user, searched for a term, and it was on page 3 of an article, but clicking it brought you to page 1, would that be a good or a bad experience?

        Then there are two things you can do.

        1) Put the article on one page and 301 redirect the old URLs of the other pages to that one page.

        2) Add noindex tags to the other pages.
