Website Redirects and Google Rank

If I want to change an existing web page URL from:

http://www.name.com/product/whisper.html
to, for example,
http://www.name.com/whisper.html

does this affect the Google rank if I use wordpress rewrite or load an .htaccess file?

The purpose for changing the URL is for SEO. We want to take one level out and get the keyword closer to the front.

Thanks for helping

It might suffer a short term rankings drop but only if the page already has links pointing to it. Google is pretty good at re-indexing URLs when they change. Do a 301 redirect from the old to the new and you should be fine.

Thanks for helping. This guy uses Wordpress for his site, so I should probably let that plugin handle the redirects.
