If you own multiple sites, should you link between them?

I am aware that owners of multiple niche affiliate sites do not link between their sites, to avoid competitors finding one site and then being able to click on all your other sites that you have linked, and stealing all of them instead of just one.

I am wanting to create two online courses (and possibly more in future) that have similar learning philosophy and content theme, each with their own website, however I am unsure whether they should be linked to one another.

Is the rule about not linking to your other sites only relevant to niche sites, or only relevant to niche sites precisely because they have unrelated subject matter to one another and want to protect them from competitors? Does the rule that applies to niche affiliate sites also apply to seperate online course wensites?

Could having a series of courses based around a learning method and theme be an advantage, because if a customer/user likes and buys one course they may also be interested buying your other course, or is it advisable to have strict seperation like with niche affiliate sites?

N.B If your recommendation is to have strict seperation, it would also mean having two completely different names for the website and course (which is fine, I don't have a problem with that), otherwise if your recommendation is to link them up and have a series then they will have similar names for the website and course.

Thanks for your help

It's perfectly natural for companies with sites in the same niche to link between each other to direct users to various bits of information.

Whether your audience will appreciate that kind of interlinking, or whether you can upsell from one to another, will depend on your audience and niche. But there won't be any negative ranking affects from this and I don't know why you're worried about your competitors finding it and what they can do about it?

For outbound linking you can linkup to each other. So that people can get information easily in a fast way.

Definitely be 100% transparent about it and only place links where they make sense from an editorial standpoint. As long as you don't use any hidden links to try to manipulate rank, I don't see why not.

Others might chime in and suggest NoFollowing the links between sites you control just to avoid any possible risk, but I am not sure that's really necessary as long as you're not doing anything overtly manipulative. I guess it all depends on your risk tolerance.

Multiple sites that are linked to each other is the same as blog networking but don't abuse it that intends to manipulate rankings. Establish those websites from the targeted audience.

Maybe you can do this and try to keep safe with the related niche.

If the niche of both the websites are same, there's no harm in linking them to each other. Just make sure they don't compete against each other for targeted keywords. If they do, you will have to put more efforts to rank them.
