Ahrefs is the best tool for finding backlinks, before it was free for 7days but right now it is 7 days trial for $7 but it is so effective. Beside it for free tool rankwatch works nice.

I would recommend you that SEMrush and Ahrefs are the best backlink finder for all the sites. It also helpful for finding the backlinks, keywords search volume, competitors analysis.

No matter which tool you ultimately decide on - Ahref, MOZ, Cognitive SEO, etc., you still have to use the best tool of all - your brain - to filter out the noise and dismiss the large percentage of worthless backlinks that your competitors have.

Penguin does not penalize for crappy, easy to get, spammy backlinks anymore and almost every website has them, whether they were obtained intentionally or not. Because of that, you will definitely waste a lot of time trying to obtain backlinks that Google is ignoring anyway.

When you compile a list of competitor backlinks, evaluate them one by one, looking to see if the site and the page they are on are relevant to your website niche. If that site/page seems to be one that could send you targeted traffic that would actually be interested in the page you want them to link to, it is probably a good link (for both SEO and traffic). Man, I read this stuff about "the best ever" and just shake my head. None of the tools are perfect; they all have their shortcomings. "The Best Ever" is really using all of them to fill the holes each tool has. Of course, pretty much only SEO firms can afford to have SEMrush, AHREFs, MOZ, Cognitive SEO, etc. We use SEMrush, but I would never describe it or any of them by themselves as "the best ever".

There are plenty of tools available which you can use for backlink checking. I am using SEMRush which is a paid tool. It works well for me. Other free tools that i am using are backlink checker, Linkody, the hoth back link checker etc. They have certain limitation and will not come with all the backlinks.

You got here some good advice, Let me tell you that to build solid BL profile you need to know what you are doing if you build bad profile you can get a penalty from Google.
