I saw on it think it was 60 minutes a few weeks ago a report on how Google is fixing meaning putting sites with their products at the top of the list in other words rigging the game. I have for quite a while thought something was screwy when I see so many sites with their home page being nothing but a picture on page one position one while other sites with great homepages with a nice long article on it just like Google has said for years that they want which is nice long articles well at the bottom of page one or on page 2.

Now on the show they were talking about really big companies but just makes me wonder how much seo work should I or anyone else do if the game is rigged. I wouldn't think a small site or odd ball niche would matter to Google but then again if one site is running google adwords ads and the other not could that be all google needs to see to put one site before the other. What are your thoughts.

60 minutes is about 10 years too late and if you were around SEs long enough,
you would know that Google is putting sites on top arbitrarily completely ignoring
SEO, something vast majority of people in here, mostly "SEO Pros", swear by.

So, G. rigging SEO is old news.

I'm not sure what the point of this thread is. Is it to tell everyone to give up? That's great news for those of us who ignore that advice. Less competition is always a good thing in my book!

None of our sites are "the big brands" and they do just fine.

I should also point out that Google is just a website, like every other website. I'm not sure why people think they have a "right" to be listed at all on it. When you start believing that, then you better start believing that everyone and anyone can put whatever they want, wherever they want, on your website, too.

Finally, their #1 goal is to make sure as many people as possible are using their search engine. Although I don't always agree that the search rankings are in the order that I would put them in, that is what they hope their algorithm does. The more people who use it, the more money they can make from people who want to advertise on it and I assure you, the "little guy" doesn't have the big bucks that the companies that frequently appear at the top of their rankings do, so if you think they are doing this to force the little guy to advertise, that would be a pretty stupid business model. The major companies rank well because they believe (rightly or wrongly) that those are the places that people using their search engine want to see first.

I think the point is people are giving G. more credit than it deserved

      And they are right.
Did G. ever ask your permission to list your site so they can use it as platform to make billions of dollars? Did it shared with you some of wealth it accumulated? What would G. do if people ask for share or demand to remove
      their sites?

So, you better believe you have right to expect G. would, at the very least, play fair game
and respect your SEO efforts to compete with others and not with those who're paying millons.

      Wrong, wrong, wrong
      G. don't care, ANY-LONGER, who and if people use SE cause in whole scheme of G's wealth it's less than 2%,
and that may surprise you but, if G. shutdown SE it financial loss will be so small, it won't make dent the same way
when Mark Zuckerberg lost 20 billions in one morning but managed not to choke on his toast.

Little guy is too little for G. to care and that doesn't matter if you like it or not is truth.

It's sad to think so many people really believe this stuff. We and many people who take part in our course say that they rank just fine.

I just talked to a student today who I haven't spoken to for a year. I knew he was killing it with his first site, which ranks #1, #2 or #3 for practically everything related to his niche. He told me that his second site, which is just a year old, is also doing extremely well and he believes that when he is really done improving it and some new marketing efforts, it will being doing three times what it is doing now. Both sites do more than $1.5 million per year in sales.

Bottom Line: You can believe that Google is against you and throw up your hands in despair or you can build the best site possible, get the best links, market it intelligently and make a ton of money.
