Do certain sites in your niche completely dominate SERPS?

So I'm in the musical instrument/lesson niche, and there is one site in particular that absolutely dominates search results in that niche. Their content is fairly basic/simple and their link profile is decent, but not spectacular.

I was just wondering if other people have a similar experience, where there's a single site that dominates your niche, despite Google's assumed desire to have parity in their results.

    I see 2 possible reasons:
    • The site doesn't face any decent competition
    • There are things you can't see (strong PBNs hidden from your eyes etc.)

      How can PBNs be hidden? It's definitely not a lack of strong competition.

    Is that website old? Usually google favors Authority sites which are trusted by users so even if you have better content but since that website is trusted it will be favored by SE.

    While if the website is new it could be possible they are usings PBNs or something. Just check their link profile properly.
