Search volume and pages

Hi Guys

When undertaking KR you have monthly search volume against pages.

I am assuming SV is the monthly search for that keyword or keyphrase
Whereas pages are the number of pages that keyword/phrase appears on
Correct?

Now we all look for high search volume low page numbers which is virtually impossible albeit in the most obscure of niches and if you want any kind of organic traffic.

My question is what is considered an acceptable SV/Page ratio?
ie... Monthly SV 50 and something like 750,000 pages or Monthly SV 2000 with say 20,000,000 pages. Is there some formula we can apply or look out for when undertaking KW research?

Regards
Costa

There is no such thing as a SV/Page ratio and there never has been. The number of search results for any given phrase is completely irrelevant and has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not you can rank on page one. The only thing that matters is the strength of the top 10 results. If you start worrying about whether or not you can beat result #30 or #100 or #1,000, you've already lost.

    Hi,
There is no such thing as an SV/Page ratio. A simple formula for better ranking is to choose high search volume keywords which have low competition. And target those keywords on the best relevant pages of your website; after that do promote those pages on high traffic websites. This is more enough to improve your website ranking.

You look and see what sites are on page one. Are they all huge, well-known sites that have so much authority that your chances are slim to none of ranking on page one? Are there big authority sites but a few smaller "no-name" ones? Is it mostly "no-name" sites on page one?

That's my criteria for "high. medium, low" competition, respectively. I have no clue what 0-1 is!

Some online tools use a rating system that ranges from 0 - 1, most in general use 0 - .33 as low, .34 - .66 as medium and .67 - 1 as high.

While all can diiffer in some way it is just another measure for low medium and high as best I have seen and or understood it to be.

I trust my brain far more than any tool. Enter a search term, see who is on page one and make a judgment.

Do they not rate competition from 0-1 ie... 0.1, 0.4, 0.7 all the way to 1?

I'm not sure who "they" is in this scenario, so I don't know what "they" use for a rating system. More important, I have no clue what the basis of that rating system is - what are they factoring into their algorithm? For most automated tools, the level of competition assessment is pretty poor.

Google's competition score is for paid advertising. It has nothing at all to do with organic search.

So basically keyword SV is one thing that you must look for. Higher the SV better the keyword since it give you a picture of how many visitors you can get. Number of pages available for that keywords is not a good picture since this number will also contain pages that have relevant keywords.

So better you go with SV and competition however competition is an ad related value not organic related value.
