Visitors to site are not actual visitors searching for your product?

Sure, it's true. Lets say you sell cat-themed jewelry for people to wear but people are actually searching for jewelry for their cat to wear. Or maybe you sell bowling balls and someone finds your site while doing research for an article they are writing on the history of bowling.

People end up on sites many times just to steal images (and content), as well. If you advertise with Google ads and look at your keyword report, you'll likely find a ton of really obscure searches that have nothing to do with what you sell. We have a site that for a decade has shown up as #1 for practically any search term for the product line that starts with "used" even though we have never sold any used products.

Hey Mike,

There are also things called "traffic bots" that can be used to fake traffic statistics on a website too. Traffic bots can artificially inflate website metrics like your page views and bounce rate, session durations, etc. Too much bot traffic can make it difficult to test and improve your site correctly so it's something that you want to try to identify and decrease as much as possible.

Thanks guys.

I am trying to help a Jewelry maker rank a new site a 2nd time around. Of course this is very high competition so they are aware of the hurdles. What is confusing me is when I started the 1st time last year, we did the SEO for 4 months then they gave up. The Stats was showing an average of 600 visitors.

Starting 2 months ago, it was still showing 600 visitors but now after 2 months of SEO this time using more focus easier to rank long tail buyer kw's the Stats are now showing only 260 visitors for the past month?

Only thing I can think of is the last time we were targeting "wholesale" kw's but now that we are targeting consumer kw's that's the reason for that big decline. Not sure if that makes sense though because there should be tons more traffic for consumers searching for jewelry than Retailers looking for Wholesale.

Can you guys help shed any light or offer any opinions on this please?

Aren't you tracking the rankings? The ranking data in conjunction with Analytics and Search Console data should give you a pretty crystal clear story of what is going on.

Even we have some visitors who are not looking for our products...its okay, its the same when you own a store on the street and sometime some people go in just look around but they dont buy anything.

Yes I had a report done showing the history of the kw's. I am just surprised that the visitor count dropped that low after now doing more focused SEO with both backlinks and 2 weekly blogs. I would have expected the visitors to increase with the better SEO efforts, not decline like that.

Yes, it could be the case that your site is ranking highly for untargeted keywords (words that have little or nothing to do with your product or service). People could be finding your site via those keywords, and that's why those visitors are not actually searching for what you're offering.

Keep in mind that very recently, Google had major problems with its algorithms and indexing of sites. For many sites, their search numbers were way down because of it. I'd throw out any numbers from the past month.

That is absolutely true especially if your content is not curtailed or niche specific . That is why the correct key word usage is important for growth.You can have all the visitors in the word but if it is not your target audience then you will not convert.

Yes, it happens a lot. Like you are selling something online and people are also searching for its relevant stuff the is related to it name and you will get impressions on your sites.

Yeah it is true. Many times it is the bots traffic which is shown in Google Analytics. If you want to really want to know if the people were actually looking for your product than you can check the bounce rate of your page. If the bounce rate is close to 0, than people are getting what they are searching on your website and if the bounce rate is close to 100 than the visitiors are not the actual visitors. They have by-chance landed on your page.

Did you compare positions?

Fewer searches for wholesale but less competition could mean you were ranking higher. Number 1 on a keyword with 100 searches gets you 30 visits a month.

Number 3 on a keyword with 200 searches gets you 16 visitors.

YES. Very true. There are search engine crawlers aside from your regular visitors. Also, not all of your visitors would want anything you are offering. It depends on the keywords you have ranked for. Be specific on your targeted keys and avoid generic terms. If you are selling something, make sure your keywords are not all about providing information but encouraging visitors to buy your what you are offering.
