I'm planning on purchasing two different domains for the same website. The keywords used in the domain are going to be the same and the only difference will be the extension. I was wondering how I should approach the SEO of this site. Would it be possible to rank for both domains on google if I build two different type of backlinks some using .net and some .com????

IMO it is always better to 301 the .net to the .com and then just use the .com for link building. Typically 1 PR 8 site will get way more than double the traffic of 2 PR 4 sites. The only advantage to using both separately would be if you are in a non competitive niche, you can easily rank in the top 10 for your keyword on both sites, and both sites have unique content.

That would be really interesting concept, you should test it. Imagine having not just both sites ranked on the first page of Google, but getting indented listings with both.

I've got a few of these going right now. I find that one is usually ranked high and in the money the other much lower, though I have had both on the first page for a few weeks.

I'm interested in setting up a 301 on the outranked sites and see what happens. Any particular caveats to a 301? ie, if the money site suddenly drops can I pull the 301 off the bench without significant penalty?

Well registering for your domain with both extensions is good and you should redirect other domain to first domain which you are going to promote for you site.
