Internal vs External backlinks

When you have a huge site above 10K pages or so, it's practically impossible to gain external backlinks for each and every page.

So, is it sufficient to create internal links as much as possible or too much internal linking also backfire...? Of course, I meant for internal links with super relevancy and not just for the heck of it.

Thanks in advance.

From my experience, if you link internally when it is MOST APPROPRIATE (ie., it actually helps highlight the value of your site's content), sometimes you end up drawing traffic.

    How?

People sharing your stuff on social media.

If your link gets shared enough, sometimes bloggers find your link and link to you

Good internal linking is always good for greater good. And you answered your own query. As long as they are relevant they won't backfire.

    Internal linking is super important.
Link relevant keywords to relevant articles and you'll see great improvement in SERP's for many keywords.

The 100 link suggestion is from Google's content guidelines. The aim is likely to minimize the relevance of links coming from link-farms. To answer the original comment's question about internal links, Google's sitemap guidelines also suggest keeping an sitemap limited to 100 links or breaking the map into smaller pages

    Backfire? Why?
Interlinking is the main source of navigation around your site without which G.
would be crawling your site blindfold and because Algo is intelligent enough
to learn that this is the same repeated link, it won' follow everyone of them.

Beside,my advice, build your site for benefit of your visitors and learn to
care less about what Google thinks.

Super relevancy? How do you know which is which?
Every link you have is more than just super relevant, because if it's not, then
why do you have not relevant in a first place?

Internal links on your web page will help a viewer to stay engaged with your website longer. This may encourage them to become a customer or follower. These links are more accessible to viewers, and they increase the authority of your web pages and overall site. So, don't think about a backfire.

Yeah too much Internal Linking is also not good for SEO purposes. But you should have a good internal linking for your important pages. Google should have multiple ways to reach your most important pages.

The link building that is done naturally, rather than forcefully inserting the link either internally or externally, is the best way to optimize your pages in Search Engines.

Internal linking is important too, and as you already said if they are relevant they are of no harm. Just remember to link appropriate keywords to appropriate article, and you are good to go.
