It also has active articles, announcements as well as notification about announcement of exams! We have on an average 500 unique people visiting our site daily. Our Alexa India rank is 39,000 as of today. I note that our bounce rate remains very high! Please guide me as to how to decrease the bounce rate.

I think you need to work on the content. Perhaps making it user-friendly and engaging can reduce the bounce rate. But let's wait for some direction from experts. I am sure they will be reading this soon.

It doesn't actually mean they leave immediately or that they didn't find what they were looking for. It just means they didn't visit any other pages.

Maybe they clicked on an affiliate link or ad. That would be a bounce, but it's the result you want. Maybe they picked up the phone and called (if it is an actual business). Again, it would register as a bounce, but that is not a bad thing.

It is possible that there is a page unintentionally ranking in Google for an unrelated search, and that is where the majority of the bounces are coming from. Think of it this way... If there was a site about dogs, they might have a page relating to "styles of dogs". You can guess what else they might rank for that would be unrelated I assume.

There isn't enough information to determine if the bounces are really good or bad.

The OP needs to do more to dig into where the bounces are coming from.

          ^^^^^this

I reckon >90% of searches I do involve me finding what I want on a website on the page I land on. I then leave (bounce) - no point looking at other pages on the website.

          .
And if they did those things then the OP would be making affiliate commissions or getting new clients and would not be here asking. Just my opinion though

also, all the metrics are getting worse not just bounce rate.

Maybe the site is loaded with popups and ads and about 1 minute into visiting the visitor can not take it anymore.

If something has changed on the website, then that is the first place I would look, otherwise it has to be the marketing. Who are they reaching? Is it the right audience?

Maybe, and that would probably be a logical assumption. But remember where we are. Logic seems to go out the window in these parts.

My point though is there could be just one page getting a lot of traffic for something unrelated that is throwing off the numbers. It could be bot traffic. Maybe someone recently posted about the site on a popular Reddit forum or in a Facebook group, but not in a way to drive targeted traffic. More as a joke or maybe as an example of something.

I once had a client whose bounce rate shot through the roof one week. After some investigating, it turned out that someone posted in a web design forum asking how to create an accordion layout like he had in one section on a page. They wanted to recreate it on their site. It brought in a few hundred clicks. Totally unrelated and from completely out of their market.

Just looking at a site's overall bounce rate can be very misleading. They should be looking at the bounce rate of individual pages, not the site overall.

There is nothing to fix into you dig in and look at where the bounces are occurring and where they are coming from. "Fresh content" doesn't mean a thing.

Many of the other posters have covered some great ideas on improving bounce rate.

However, you might be focusing too much on bounce rate and not considering dwell time or the closest measure in Google Analytics "Average time on page" which you can find in behaviours.

Rank brain as it is understood is focused on dwell time among other things. So if you look at the relative reading time of the content on a page vs the dwell time, would you say the dwell time (average time on page) is high or low.

If your dwell time is low then you would have a problem but if people visiting a page are spending time reading your content then this will be a positive and would actually help to rank your pages higher.

So are the average times on the page high or low?

Test with a sample of pages by timing yourself reading the page and compare with what GA has for each page. If your reading time vs GA is about the same or GA time is longer then dwell time is likely to be higher and therefore a strong positive. However, if the GA time is short relative to your reading time then you have issues.

I think one of the cause of high bounce rate in the website is not only the visitors that didn't visit any pages, but they are not the target traffic for your site.

70% of visitors leave almost immediately (they bounce)
Bounce rate is not the number of people who view a single page and leave immediatley. It is the most misunderstood metric in GA.

If you want to find that out, you need to track your multi-page visitors.

Make your content more readable. I would recommend installing Grammarly as it helps me a lot while writing content for my site. Also, the bounce rate is high due to users gets pushed off your site too early. Try your title and starting paragraph to be more engaging. In the end, bounce rate is all about user experience. If it is high, then your users and not satisfied with your content.

Start with analysis: look at your top performing pages (why do people click on them? what is the difference with other pages?), look at your worst performing pages (what could be wrong with them? outdated info, low speed etc), check your keywords (are you sure that you use right keywords and they correspond to the content of your website?), make a technical audit (there is a lot of free and easy tools to do it). When all technical issues are solved, consider bloggers outreach to get backlinks and attract new audience.

Is your content calls for user engagement? Sometimes the bounce rate is not a bad thing. A user searches for data and finds it on your website. Once he has the data, he leaves the site without visiting other pages on your blog.

It shows your web page gave him exactly what he wanted and he does not have any other reasons to stick around your site.

It is common for information providing sites. The only solution is to show something as bait to get the user visit other pages.

Or you should optimize the template if it runs on Blogger CMS.

The reason the bounce rate might be high is due to the fact your website might not have a proper content.

Other factors include poor interlinking, no related posts and poor website design.

Concentrate on Good content and try to add relevant links to your inner pages of your website!

According to your question, you have to work on the content present on your website. I hope that the content present on your website is not user engaging or the wording you are using in your content is not easy to read. This is the major reason that you have much traffic but still have a high bounce rate. One more thing that you have to take care of is that the title of your webpage is strictly matched with your content on the web page. Because if a visitor visits your website and don't find the relevant information then automatically exits your website immediately. I hope this information is helpful to you.

First of all, you have to check where your traffic is coming from. Select the right audience. Because this is the fact when an irrelevant person comes to your site he will go back within a second. Because he is not interested. Then other thing is to work on your site design and the content. Hope after this you will get a better response.

Bounce is interesting in SEO.. we have GA that counts 1 visit 1 page as a bounce. As Mike suggests clicking on an external link going forward would still be considered a "Bounce"

A "Bounce" as Google sees it... The searcher clicks a link and visits a page, then presses back to the serps and then clicking on a another listing within the same serps the end user used to click on your site.

A user in the eyes of Google that is searching "higher education" and visits your page and then backs out back to google and immediately searches another term is in theory NOT deemed a bounce. And SPECIFICALLY this is not the type of data we can get our hands on.

Does your content push the user to refine the search? or are you simply providing great content that supplies the needed answer?

I want to say it was Mike that used the term "Wedding" as an example a few years back. Look at the content that is provided when searching that term. The links on those pages are intent based links. "how expensive is a wedding" "do I have to wear a white dress to my wedding" etc etc.

What you really need to look at is the INTENT of your user and how tyour content may effect that... does it answer it completely or does it leave further questions that you are indeed answering elsewhere and should provide links to that content on the pages viewed?

    Hope that Helps!

    Hi Hemant,

A word of caution, bounce rates are a diagnostic metric that helps your to understand what is going on, it's not a KPI (Key Performance Indicator).

You generally should not have a bounce rate goal, it's just a diagnostic metric to help you understand what is happening.

In many cases lower Bounce rates may be a good thing, but low bounce rates can also be an indication of trouble. Looking at your website overall bounce rate tells you very little that is useful in marketing. You need to be looking at bounce rate in context to location, goals, and engagement objective on individual pages, not on all pages collectively.

If a typical user can complete their objective on a single page of your website then a high bounce rate would be indicative of success, and a low bounce rate an indication of a problem. It's just a piece of the puzzle, a mere hint about what may be happening, and anyone telling you that a high bounce rate is not good, without know anything about your website objectives and how you've structured the flow on your website engagement is simply giving generic information that may be inappropriate to your goals.

Stop thinking of Bounce rates as an objective and instead use it to understand what may be happening on each individual page of your website.

You may want to look at Average Session Duration, Or Time On Page metrics, but even then it isn't very useful unless you have setup a Timer Trigger or Scroll depth script to trigger events based on user engagement. The easiest way I have found to do this is by using Google Tag Manager. GTM has Scroll depth triggers and Timer triggers built in that can be used to get a more accurate picture of engagement levels,

There may be several reasons for having high bounce rates. No proper and interesting content or takes more time to load your site or poor user interface or your site may have several pop-ups, may not be mobile responsive. Except for content optimization, If all the factors I have told you are doing well then you should focus more on content in your page.

      Or...

It might be a good thing that your bounce rate is high especially if you are meeting all your Marketing goals. High Bounce rate on it's own is not necessarily an indication of a problem.

      To use an analogy:

If an engine is designed to run at 200 degrees then it is not a problem if it is running at 200 degrees, Just because 200 degrees may be too high for a different engine that is not designed to go over 180 degrees, doesn't mean it's bad for the 200 degree design. In fact, if the engine designed to run at 200 is not running near that temperature it may be experiencing problem because it is to low.

And just as an engine can be designed to run at different temperatures, websites and marketing campaigns can be designed to run at very high bounce rates. In fact some may be design to run a 100% bounce rate, and anything less than that could be an indication of a problem.

Stop applying generic advice to specific marketing scenarios, it's a sign that you may know not of what you speak.

      HTH,

Content is not king. I wish people would stop spouting that BS.

And it won't necessarily lower bounce rate. Wikipedia has great content and I bet their bounce rate is through the roof.

Bounce rate is a dumb metric to focus on. Period.

I would suggest create longer content, add video, and maybe break content up by adding pictures in post

As per my working experience, Good and relative content is enough to decrease bounce rate, though you can add some multimedia to attract users and make them stay longer on your page.

LOW BR is due to either:
    1. they didn't find what they were looking for

      4. Their boss walked in and they had to close all non-work related tabs.

      5. They got diarreah.

The main reason for increasing the bounce rate is content. So I will suggest to improve your content, make visitors engage with your content. Write relevant and unique content.

Another reason is irrelevant visitors. Try to get backlinks from niche sites. The sites which are relevant to your domain. This will helps you to get relevant visitors.

Content relevancy & interlinking play an important role to reduce the bounce rate of a website. If the bounce rate is high, then need to update the content with the more relevancy and inclusion of supporting links. This will help to reduce the bounce rate.
