One of the best reasons why keywords fluctuates in search results is that your competitors websites are performing well and your site is not.

If you make changes to your home page or getting / losing backlinks, it will probably fluctuate.

If your competitors are making changes to their pages or getting new backlinks or losing backlinks, you may see fluctuations (even if you are also getting backlinks).

My keywords that rank 1-8 or so fluctuate very little. My keywords that rank 11- infinity will fluctuate all over the place. I rarely check or pay much attention to where keywords rank until I get them on page 1. It doesn't really matter if your keyword ranks 35th or 335th. For many niches if your keyword is not in the top 5 spots you are essentially invisible. Not much point in continually checking or worrying about fluctuation if you are not going to get views or clicks anyway.

Sometimes it is done due to the google updates and another reason is, your competitors performed well as compare to you so the competitor websites come in rank and you are getting out of the SERP.

    Yes.

Rankings don't just randomly change for no reason at all.

This is normal and expected, especially if your website is new with little or no backlinks. Keywords also fluctuate in rankings when backlinks are being built to a site (this is referred to as the Google Dance). Fluctuations are only temporary.

Google fluctuates happens all the time. Ranking fluctuation sometimes related to an Google algorithm change and sometimes they just as a part of Google's volatility. BTW, Some tools such as MozCast specially designed to help you keep track of the regular basis changes in the Google algorithm. Do not freak out and do whatever you want to do best for your customers and your site.

As others have said, this is natural fluctuations in your SERP positioning.

It means you have more work to do still on that page. Compare known on-page ranking factors between your site and top ranking competitors with a similar site type - similar as in, if you're a local business then don't look at the Yelp page in the #1 spot!

Find the average of the most important ranking factors and see how far outside the average your page is. Start with areas where you are below the average and save a copy of the page before you make your changes. Within about 14 days you will know if your changes worked or not. If they didn't, load the archived page copy from before. If they did, consider another round of changes. Be very careful reducing your averages, as it sometimes causes rankings to drop.

There are tools to do this easily like CORA or PoP, but you can also just right-click to view source code for all your competition and track their averages in a sheet.

Once you get as optimized as possible with your on-page, build as many quality links as it takes to end the 'Google Dance' once and for all.

Google rankings are all over the place for almost a year now, if not more.
Some think, google tried to do an update and messed it all up so they are trying to fix the problem and thus those crazy fluctuations.
    Don't know... I don't work for google.
