I built a WP blog site recently and submitted to google under http://www when really WordPress will block the www so it is a non www site.

Many backlinks were built under the www and non www version (once it was realized).

Google has indexed the site and it ranks well under www but it redirects to the non www http://

where should I be pointing my backlinks to??

www or non www??

To the end user, it won't matter. They arrive in the same place anyway.

To the search spiders..it might. This page will help explain & give solutions.

Thanks Todd, I read the article which was helpful but didn't really address this issue since both domain names will direct to my non www site.

The spiders is what I am concerned about here. I've heard it's bad to have your links through your www that is redirecting to you non www site BUT google has already indexed my www redirect version and that has already ranked well...

If anyone can please help here I'd really appreciate it!

I agree you should stick with one, and redirect 301 to another url, that way will ensure all link juice not wasted!

This is a great thread. Exactly the answer I was searching for.

But, can somebody explain exactly how to do this redirect please?

ANyways WP redirects www version to just http version. You should build links to the redirected version but it won't matter much as there is a redirect.

Also you have to set domain.com as the preferred one in the Webmastertools and Google will show them as domain.com in SERPs. Problem finished.

Alright, set non www preffered domain. www version has always done a redirect so it wouldn't utilize link juice as well if I backlinked there.

Hopefully google will recognize this soon and index Non www version.

    I appreciate all the support!

    i dont understand this thread.

Every WP with PLATINUM SEO or ALL-IN-ONE SEO plugin will make this question moot - since http://yoursite. com and http://www .yoursite.com will be automatically converted into www.

So..simple get platinum seo plugin..and in WP under "general" you set your site information as www. yoursite.com

And platinum seo plugin does all the rest, never bother with this again.

So doing ONLY this will create just one version of the URL in the search engines? So there is absolutely no need to perform the 301 redirect?

I've been told so many different things in the past 24 hours it made my head spin.

the plugin (respective what it does, the "canonical URLs" setting) does the redirect.

the plugin modifies your .htaccess file and this then does the 301 redirect (without www is always rewritten to www. or the other way around)..maybe it even works WITHOUT SEO plugin by simply entering that information in WP how you need the URL. (Never tried it since i ALWAYS use platinum seo)

And no, you don't need to do anything in addition.
