I have a google blogspot blog. The blog is about 3 years old. I've some top keywords which is ranked by google. I'm receiving 500-1000 page view daily. Now I want to buy a paid domain. My question is. If I buy a new domain, can visitor find me with those keyword like before and is there any ranking problem with domain parking?

This number of daily visitors is really good already. I would have not expected that it's possible to achieve this with a free blog.

I am not an SEO expert, but as far as I know, the rankings belong to a specific domain. And if you change your domain, you would have to redirect your current URLs to your new domain. For example, currentdomain.com/page1 to newdomain.com/page1.

But I guess Blogspot doesn't provide this feature of redirecting URLs.

Of course, you could purchase a custom domain and connect it with your Blogspot blog. But I suppose the same applies here, that you will lose your rankings. But maybe someone else can clarify this.

When your goal is to build a successful high traffic blog, I would not rely on a free blog hosted by a third-party provider like Blogspot, Blogger, etc. I would always get some hosting (e.g. from Hostgator, Bluehost, Siteground etc.), buy a custom domain and set up my own blog with (self-hosted) WordPress. This gives you much more freedom and more possibilities to optimize your blog.

Of course, there is a learning curve to learn WordPress and setting up a self-hosted blog and doing SEO. But I would always prefer this route.

And domain parking is something else. It's when you buy a custom domain, but you don't build any website or content on this domain, but just set it with your domain registrar to display promotional links on your domain.

I pretty much agree with what Bjoern has said. I would keep that blogspot blog and indeed keep building it up. I would also build a new website on your own domain in the same niche. You can then work on funnelling the traffic and link love to the new site slowly over time.

Based on my own experience it is a good idea as long as you take the necessary precautions (actions) to separate your Blogspot account from your personal domain. Otherwise, you stand the chance of Blogspot banning your Blogspot account.

As a minimal do not leave any tracks:
    • Create your personal domain under a real business name. That means you can go online and create an business such as a LLC.
    • Register your personal domain under your business name.
    • Register your host under your business name.
    • Separate your domain name and host.
    • Hosting wise acquire a dedicated I.P.

Here is the difficult and doable part: Never post to your Blogspot account and personal domain with the same I.P., i.e. from your home PC's I.P.

    How?

Home I.P. The perfect scenario is to post to Blogspot from the I.P. you have always used. There are times when posts are made to Blogspot from other I.P.s such as when you are traveling. That would be considered as a minimal and it is seldom questioned by Blogspot.

Office I.P. The perfect scenario is to post to your personal domain from an I.P. other than your Home I.P. I know of people that flip the above according to their personal circumstances.

    Why?

As previously mentioned "Do not leave any tracks" because third party platforms can trace every I.P. that you use to access said platform. Third party platforms can always change their user policies anytime they wish. Today, they may allow you to cross promote your Blogspot account with you personal domain and tomorrow they can stop allowing any form of cross promotion.

    The takeaway:
It can be done the right way or the wrong way. The choice is yours.

I am assuming it is a pure as the driven snow "white hat"blogspot blog. If so, I can't see why it would need all that stuff you mention. I am thinking just build out both of them. They already have a great asset with that traffic so should build on that.

No, visitors will not find the new domain with those keywords like before because the new domain name is not ranked for those keywords as they are on your Blogspot. Expect 3 to 6 moths or longer for your new domain to receive a good ranking for those keywords. BTW, the terms "rank" and "ranking" are subjective. "Placement in the SERPs" is better.

A parked domain receives no ranking and no placement in the SERPs. Initally it might, but after Google figures it out.. say goodbye to any rationale.

The rankings do not transfer to your new domain.

I would suggest you start growing an email list fast on the free blog and create a landing page on your new website.

I am not sure it's possible to add an optin form on your free website but one way you can do this is to add a link so when a visitor clicks he is directed to your landing page on your new site.

Another thing you can do is to write a short version of a blog post on your free blog and have visitors click to the new website to read the full version.

Agree about the optin list, thats pretty much a given.

The blog should be thought of as a supporting site where you can funnel visitors via links to your main domain. This is where you collect leads and sell stuff..

I agree with Maxdosh. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
You should leave the blogspot as is and setup a
separate site on your own hosting and do the
    linking, list building, etc.

Yes, the ranking will be affected. That's why many experts suggest not using Blogspot in the first place.

However, I'd say the domain change in your case is totally worth it in the long run though. Research carefully, get some help if possible and you should be find, especially if you have an email list.

  • Ranking won't be transferred to your new website unless you installed redirects (301) from your old domain to your new domain. Otherwise your new domain will be like a fresh start. Definitely keep that blog that you have and maybe post a few backlinks on your old website that lead to your new website.

I think you have misunderstood what has been said. He isn't looking to 301 his blogspot site because its impossible anyway. It can be used to funnel visitors and link juice though.

Yes,Visitors can find your new blog with old keywords.

I have did same in oct 2015 when I redirected my blogspot blog to new domain name.

I had much more traffic that time on free blog.

It would be better if you don't take risk and go for a new site, best of luck

You will also need to work hard on the new domain to give it visibility. You can also use those top key words to help improve the ranking.

The new site would take some time to rank. you should continue the work on Blogspot to use anchor text so that it can link back to your website.
