Is SERP position in Google Search Console accurate?

Just a quick question to fellow warriors, Is SERP position in Google Search Console accurate? This can be visible when you click "Performance", then check positions option.

For many times, I saw those positions are way off than what I can find in Google search results. They tend to have better positions then my actual positions.

    Yes. The difference is due to averaging.... Google averages the position your page was at the location the search was made.


    So, you can be #1 in Chicago but #3 in Las Vegas and # 37 in Pakistan.



    Without Pakistan, your position is 1.5. With Pakistan it is 13.66.


    To get it harder, your position can change during the period you're looking at:


    you could be #1 in Chicago on Monday and Tuesday, #3 on Wednesday, 3 on Thursday and #1 again on Friday.


    If you select one day and only the country you're actually competing in, the numbers will be closer to what you see (unless you're using your computer to search and do not clear cache).

    It certainly is. The only problem is that they take an average and report it and the search results vary from person to person.

    The reason being, Google tends to personalize search results for effectiveness I think.

    When I work on my SEO and try to use Google Search Console data it barely makes sense to me sometimes. I try to cross-check it with my search results (even incognito mode) and yet it doesn't tally.

    That kinda leaves me disappointed but then the analytics on my site doesn't lie and it makes sense when you compare your analytics to search console.

    I hope that makes sense. English isn't my first language.

    If you have a sitemap that you keep updated for your site, you can submit that sitemap in Google Search Console to make it easier for Google to crawl your site and to let it know about new pages you've published.

    No, and reason for that is endless changes conducted by Algo.
    Every time new data has been discovered by crawlers it's immediately

    It is accurate, yes, but keep in mind that Google Console shows your AVERAGE ranking for a keyword or phrase, not the ACTUAL ranking.

    Rank trackers on the other hand show the live ranking at the time it was run. So Console will give you a better overview of how well you're doing imo

    Yes. Google's ranking positions changes with the location. Your page might rank differently in SERPs in the USA. It might rank in a different position in Australia. It depends on your competitors in that particular area.

    Yes, it is accurate for what it is telling you. It is telling you the average ranking for when the search query was performed across the time period selected. The SERPS are not static. You will see different results in different regions of the same country, region, or even same town many times.

    So yes, it is completely accurate, but you have to understand what it is telling you.

      There are plenty of rank tracking services out there that allow you to check the rankings in different regions.
